Folks,

Any particular insurance carriers are good with vintage auto insurance? Also, how much insurance do you carry beyond coverage for the vehicle value?

I have found Hagerty Insurance to be a good company for vintage auto insurance. As far as coverage my suggestion is to carry the same coverage as you do with your modern auto, but the insurance reps's will be able to give you the best advice.

I compared Grundy and Hagarty. I found Grundy to be a bit less expensive so I went with Grundy. Both have good reputations. I've not personally had a claim so I can't speak to customer service. One member had a loss a couple of years ago while participating in a VCCA tour and I heard he had some problems getting Hagarty to honor their coverage. Take that with a grain of salt since I wasn't personally informed of all the details but that was the scuttlebutt going around the tour. I don't believe you'll have to worry about carrying more coverage than your car is worth since they are agreed value policies. If you want more coverage than they agree your car is worth they won't insure it. I'm assuming there is a procedure for resolving differing opinions as to value, likely an independent appraisal.

I have used Hagerty for the past 10 years. Only had one claim and they were a breaze to work with. Another VCCA member had Hagerty and also had a good experience. In his case the car was declared a total loss. The major problem was his agreed value was to low so had to pony up more $$$ to get it fixed. Hagerty worked with him so he could buy the car back for a very reasonable price which helped him keep the car and get it fixed. Another VCCA member, with JC Taylor (they also have the VCCA policy) is in process of getting his '57 that hit a deer fixed. Fortunately he had paid for enough value to have the car totally fixed.

I have only had one contact with Grundy. Talked directly with Mr. Grundy about them quoting on VCCA policy. He told me to talk to a specific person, which I did. Never got a quote so I wrote off Grundy. It may be that was not typical.

I have Hagerty because they would allow my grandchildren drive our cars. J C Taylor would not. We also have a Hagerty Agent down the street and he is a car guy.
