Does the flat part of the shift knob face up to accommodate the vacuum shift so the driver can shift with ease

First notice one edge is slightly thicker than the other. The thicker edge goes away from the steering wheel. The knob is at right angle to the steering wheel so it is sligtly canted. Before installing knob heat up in hot water so it goes on easier.
