I own a 1930 Chevrolet Sport Roadster and would like to clarify the recommended Oil Grade that should be used in my 3 Speed Manual Transmission & Differential .
Every time i raise this subject with other 1929 - 1932 Chevrolet Owners i get conflicting advice .
Penrite Oils suggest that i use TRANSOIL 140 (Note : Penrite Oils equivalent of 600w is TRANSOIL 250 ( Steam Oil ) but this to heavy.)
Please advise , thank you for your help.

Not sure why anyone would depart from the manufacturer's recommended oil, i.e. 600W or modern equivalent. That's what I have put in my tranny, U-Joint case, rear-end and steering box, and everything works just fine. Don't plan to drive in cold weather, so thinning for winter driving is not an issue. As they used to say, if all else fails, read the manual!

600W is the correct oil to use in your 1930 transmission and rear end. You can get the correct 600W oil from the Filling Station. www.fillingstation.comBy the way, 600W is equivalent to the modern day 160W.

I believe the FS also sells reproduction owner and service manuals for that vehicle at a reasonable cost. They have been most helpful in my quest to learn the basics from GM at that time! Best of luck!

It might be noted that it is not recommended for use in tranny`s with free-wheeling and synchromesh. According to the 1932 Chevrolet owner's manual, 160W (which has the same viscosity rating as 600W) should be used in the synchromesh transmission and free-wheeling.
