Can someone tell me for what years an umbrella holder was offered as an option? Was it an original Chevy option or some sort of aftermarket add on?

Are they difficult to find? Are they being reproduced?

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

It is not in my 1939 accessory book, It is in then 1940 and 1941. My guess is 1942 had it for the last year.

The holders are being reproduced. I see them on eBay at times. The umbrella is the difficult item.

Gene, My '46 accessory book has the holder in it. Don't know about '47 or '48. I have the holder with umbrella in my '46 wagon.

How about some pictures and explanation on the umbrella?

As Ray says, how about posting pictures on your 46 with the umbrella and it's holder. That would really be something interesting to see. I'll bet there are a lot more members than Ray and I who would like to see it? Especially Ray and the rest of the 1946ers.

Of all the accessories for the 41, I think the most obscure are the umbrella and the tail pipe extension. The green 41 convertible at Hershey each fall has the extension as does the one in the AACA museum, other than that ...

As to the umbrella being in either one of them I didn't to look for one in the green one and couldn't get close enough to the museum one to see down inside where it would be. They have it roped off to keep people like me from crawling all over it. And borrowing stuff.

Back to your 46 wagon. I don't doubt you at all, but it's show and tell time. I'm interested to see it the same pattern was carried over after the war.

Speaking of roping off the car, that's what I'm going to do if I ever show my 41 project. It'll look better from twenty (20) feet away. I'll use velvet rope and gold colored stantions(sp) and put it under a canopy (birds can be so annoying sometimes). Will too!

I had originally come across a site online for the 1948 Chevy that listed the umbrella holder as an option for that year as well. So it seems it might have persisted for almost a decade, from 39-48?

Was there an "official" Chevy umbrella as well? From Ray's comment, it seems so.

Opps - I mmissed it. It is in the 1948 accessory list also.

My understanding is the '48 Umbrella Holder is slightly different than the other years. The mounting tabs; as I recall; are on opposite sides of the cone as opposed to being on the same side of the cone. ( Hope that makes sense )

The '48 booklet does not show an umbrella as an accessory.

I to would like to see one of these originals installed..Its in the front pass side correct...Must take up some valued space?

I don't see that snack tray in the Chevy Accessory list, so I'm not sure it's an "official" accessory or aftermarket. Maybe Gene will see this and give us some of his expert input.

the instructions for proper installation of the accessory Peep Miror is on the rain gutter...Well if a stock 48 fleetline came equiped with the rain deflectors over the wing window,how would you attach the mirror on the gutter far enough forward to make it useful???? i.e. the deflector is in the way...As you can see in the pics on the black Aero,he has installed it on the deflector not the gutter

Bruce, I'm going to scold you. Should have started a new topic, "peep mirror".

Think about it, if it was mounted to the "gutter" how would you open the door without knocking if off????? I think I'm right on this?? All I have seen is on the deflector.

Shame on me guys, the previous owner didn't read the instructions and mounted the mirrors on the top edge of the door. The good part is that I can see out of both the drivers and passenger side mirrors!!

Russell I am probably losing my mind once again....As I was looking though the accessory book the other day and reading the discription about the peep mirror I could have sworn I read install on the Rain gutter and not the rain deflector..And yes I never thought about the door issue..If someones got the 48 accessory book handy,maybe you could set me straight

I'm sorry if I mislead everyone about the umbrella. In my post I should have said "umbrella holder and 'period' umbrella". In my '46 accessory book it only shows and talks about the holder. It says "holder provides a place for an umbrella while driving". However, in my '42 accessory book the umbrella and holder are both discussed and describes the umbrella in detail. It is described as best quality oiled silk fabric and ribs of tempered steel. Smart appearing-molded Tenite handle and base with Tenite tips on the ribs to match. Oil silk polka dot pattern and attractive silk carrying cord.
The '42's part number for both is 985602 and the '46's part number for the holder only is 985929. My take on this is that if you have a '42 holder you should also have the umbrella described above to be absolutely correct and in '46 and I assume beyond you could only need the holder to be correct!!
I'll post a picture once I figure out how to do it!

Yes the accessory book does say attach the peep mirror to the rain gutter...Oviously a mistake by the books producer

Just goes to confirm that mistakes and misinformation is nothing new. Been around since the beginning of time and will continue.

I think, mount to the deflector. Look at your copy of The History, I think their is a picture with the peep. I'm at work and can't look to see.

BTW,I had mentioned after restoring and installing my peep mirror it would blow in the wind an go out of adjustment.I shoved some flexable gasket cement up between the ball and the mirror head and now over time it keeps its position and works fine...Another fab job to make this old classic come back to life
