My 36 water pump has about 3/8 inch end play. Seems like a lot. Is this normal ? The pulley self aligns with the belt and it works ok, I think. Thanks

I had a machine shop press in parts once. They forgot to put the spacer between the impeller and housing. That caused slop and the impeller to rub on the housing.

Either the thrust washer ground up or the pressed on pulley moved ahead. Ther is no housing or baffle plate on a 1936 for the impeller to rub on.

I have two engines and the pumps are the same on both. The belt seems to keep the pump centered ok . No noise and no leaks. Thanks for the comments. My only concern was is the pump performing as it should ?

Hi Dick, The pump will still perform okay, but with the shifting of the shaft you will need to keep a close watch that it doesn't pull in air, which is the enemy of the cooling system.
