When measureing wheels to determine their width where do you measure from? Outside to outside or inside to inside? What width wheels is correct for a 1940 Special Deluxe 4 pasanger Coupe?

Thank You

My original reply to Sparky was incorrect. The 1937-48 16" wheels were 4" wide.1937-38 wheels having 8 slots and the 1939-48 having 4.
The wheels also were used on 1/2 ton trucks thru 1954 although there were optional sizes available.
In 1952,during the year the 1/2 ton truck wheels were increased in width to 4 1/2" and that was the wheel sold as a replacement for prior years-the 4" being discontinued. This came to mind today when I reread my original post.
The 1948 cars (also option on some trucks) with the 15" wheels had a 5" rim width. These were still the 6 lug wheels.Passenger cars from 1949 up into the '60's had 5" rims including the later 14"-wagons in the 60's and other options could be 5 1/2" and 6".They were all the 5 lug wheels.

So Gene, let me be sure I have this right....

The optional 1948 15 inch wheels were 5 inches (wide). They were still six hole (lug) wheels; but 15 inch instead of the 'standard' 16 inch. Also, is it correct that these optional 1948 15 inch wheels still had the 'clips' for the 41-48 'small' type hubcaps??

And then in 1949 the passenger car wheels switched to 15 inch, 5 inches in width, with just five holes. Is that correct?? And these 49 on up wheels had the 'bumps' (not clips) to hold on the hubcaps?? Thanks. Bill.

Correct-The 1948 used the same hub caps for either wheel.I would say about 50% had the 15" wheels. They were 6 hole.

The 1949-53 had the same wheel ( 5 hole) and hub cap clips (exception-the 1953 Bel Air had full wheel covers and no clips)...The 1954 was the first to have the humps that the small hub caps fit over.
