have the exhaust manifold surfaced at the local machine shop if , when you straight edge the mating surfaces, they aren't true. mike

You may have a warped manifold. It is recommended that you assemble the exhaust and intake manifolds together. Take a straight edge across the face of both manifolds from end to end. With a feeler gage insure there is no clearance between any of the surfaces that meets the head. If there is any they can be handles in two ways. Take the manifolds to a machine shop and have the mating surfaces milled. The second method, and the one I prefer, is to take the manifolds to a machine shop that has a monster sanding belt. While keeping the parts cool by adding water the belt can true the edges in short order. When the belt has touched all the surface it is ready to reinstall. Insure that the three intake rings are in the correct place and seated before tightening the bolts.

If you want to do it at home: buy a course sanding belt, cut it so you have a long straight strip of emery cloth. Tack the strip down on a straight board about 12" longer than the manifold. Lay the manifold on the emery cloth and rub it back and forth until all surfaces are clean. Depends if you want the satisfaction of doing it yourself or paying someone else to do it.

I have found milling or surface grinding the best method as the paper tends to be too flexible therefore not neccessarily straight. Tony

Years ago I had the manifolds on my '39 milled or ground due to pitting on the gasket surfaces.
Also check timing/fuel-air mixture...manifold temperature could be running too hot and burning out the new style "asbestos free" gaskets.
If there was a problem due to burning out due to leakage an exhaust leak could/should be heard right when new gasket was installed..Also pouring some MMo or other oil thru the carb. would allow smoke to be seen coming from the area if its leaking.
