Has anyone ever seen a 31 AE 4dr Special Sedan with no windshield crank? My 31 don't have one. it doesn't even have a spot for one. This car also has two wiper blades that look like they were installed at the factory?

Any one seen this before?

When we bought our 30 it did not have one, but when I took the header panel off you could see that it should be there. When the car was restored it was left out, most likely the gears were bad and they just did not bother to fix. I found good used parts and now have a roll up windshield, which is great on a hot day.

The regulator gear for the windshield does not connect to the metar windshield header at al. It consists of an oak windshield header board (about 41"x3") on the back of which was a set of white metal gears operated by a crank which came through to the inside. The windshield rolled up about 2" into the space created between the header board and the metal header, a space about 3/4" wide. I suggest someone removed this whole assembly and if so, there would not be a trace of anything wherev it use to be, and simply put in its place a plain wooden header board. If you want to see what one looks like, let me know I can place a photo of mine.

There should be two brackets, one on each side, to mount the board that the gear mechanism is attached. Some one probably just put a flat board in that place so the upholstery material could be nailed, finishing the look of the interior.

Bob, check your email, I just sent you some pictures of the regulator board from my 31 coupe. I hope that they are the same.

Hello Gunsmoke,
My 31 Coach has the windshield crank handle, but it just spins around and does nothing. I would like to know how the mechanism works and repair it to working order. Would you tell me and others how the regulator with it's gears connect to the windshield to raise and lower the glass. I'm guessing that a gear connects to an arm or bracket on the windshield frame and like a cogwheel train the gear moves the frame up and down, but I don't know. Will you post a picture of the regulator and describe how it works? Have you any ideas how to repair the regulator/gears or where to get replacement parts? Thanks

I will post a couple of photos. The windshield has a couple of slots welded to the top about 20" apart. Short stubs from the gears on the regulator insert in these and as the regulator gears rotate, the stubs on the gears raise the windshield. The gears themselves work like a car rearend, a crown and pinion is operated by the crank, causing one gear to rotate and a secondary shaft running length of the board operates the second gear causing it to rotate. The gears are white metal and often not maintained (they probably needed lubrication once a year)so as they got stiff, gears were stripped. I have a second one in fair operating condition I may decide to list in parts for sale section.

Thank you for the e-mail pics, that helps a lot..
When I found the car it had been redone in the interior. I guess they must have replaced the header board and removed the crank assembly

Thanks

There is plenty of expertise on '31 Chevys that frequent ChatII. Just ask the questions and someone will respond. May take a little time depending on whose on line and who's on a trip. If you don't find the windshield parts put a wanted ad for it. I am consistently amazed how often someone on ChatII has the parts wanted.

The windshield regulators are different for the 1929 and 1930. The 1931 is for that year only. I found this out when I had some extras that I sold and one of the buyers told me about and the parts book show the difference by being different numbers. They look similar but the 1931 where the flat bar goes between the left and right gears is flush with the bottom of the outer metal plate and the 1929 and 1930 hangs down about 1/2 inch longer.
