Does anyone know of a source for this spring? I didn't see one in The Filling Station catalog. Thanks, Tom

There are universal return springs that most any local automotive supply store will have. You’ll likely have to ask for a clutch return spring; they’re pretty heavy duty that will easily bring the brake peddle back up. The one end of these springs has a long strait section that you cut to length and bend your own hook in. Chevys of the 40s shows a brake pedal return spring in their online cat. I purchased a spring from Agri Supply (it's probably for a lawn mower deck). It's close to the correct length and strength, I put it on today and here's hoping it works. (brake lights staying on will definately run the battery down.) Thanks for all the help. Tom

Other than the four brake shoe return springs in the brakes themselves and the one for the park brake, is there another return spring such as found for the clutch? I don't recall that there is. Charlie

Charlie My '40 has one coming off the bottom of the brake pedal bar; right next to the same type spring for the clutch pedal.

The only brake return spring I can find in my parts books is for the parking brake. Would someone identify the group and part number for a 1941 car brake return spring that would be correctly hooked up to the brake pedal arm? Thanks, Charlie

I think the spring we are talking about is in group 4.827. The part # in my 29-51 book if I am correct is 3691813. It is listed 47-51, serv. (30 coils-5 free length) on page 244 of that same book is a good picture of the spring. Thanks, Tom edit- the book lists 40-46 ALL PASS in the line above it with the rest of the line blank, so does this mean that the same part works for 47-51 ALL? Tom

Tom, My books list the same thing, but that is the parking brake cable pull back spring. I still say that there is no spring attached to the brake pedal to master cylinder arm(s) as some have seemed to claim. (There is merely the clutch pedal pull back spring in that similar location.) Least I've never seen on on a 41. Charlie

Charley, the clutch pedal return spring is in group #0.844 and the part #3653114. It looks as though the same spring is used for 40-51 models. My 50 had a brake pedal return spring mounted near the base of the pedal and it hooks into a slot on the frame. My pedal would come back up but not far enough to trip the brake lamp switch. The old spring was still hooked up on both ends but was broken. I will try to get a photo of the spring attached. Look up the picture of the brake main cylinder in my book it's on page 244. This is the master cylinder and the brake pedal with the spring attached and has nothing to so with the clutch. Go Heels....Thanks Tom

I see the spring that you're talking about. I do acknowledge that it is a brake return spring. School is out though in my mind as to whether one is applicable to a 41. In the diagram there is a place for the spring to hook to but not on a 41, etc. Charlie

Should be a hole right above the pivot pin on the brake bar. Can't imagine them changing it from '40. No holes in your car in these places?

http://www.1948chevy.com/support/mystory108.htmCharlie, Are you doing up a story like this on this your '41 cabriolet? You haven't mentioned it lately; just wondering.

Richard, I'm going to really check out the brake return spring issue. The book is not too clear on the application. Off topic re the 41 project: No. I'll be done before it is. It's junk, anyway. I told my wife to call a salvage yard after I'm gone and to pay them to haul it away. I done with it. Am too! I think I'm going to start on the 50. Thanks for asking. That sure is a nice 48 you posted. I noticed that it had those little radiator supports that CC is missing. Charlie

Charlie Sorry about taking this off topic, but I think that with all the sheet metal repairs you had done on it, somebody would be happy to take up the banner and go for it. I'm sure you could at least get more for it than paying someone to haul it away... Sorry it has gone this way for you.

the National Chevy Assoc. of St. Paul, Mn. lists the brake return spring on their web site. In the Brakes/Wheel cylinders section and under master cylinder it shows the very spring that was on my 50 chevy. Don't know if 40s even had a spring but thats the spring thats on my car and it's $10. Thanks, Tom
