we'd like to replace the aftermarket voltage regulator...how can we tell if the spare delco-remy we have is correct for our application?.. the only markings are on the flanges: "6VN" & "2B"..."1118" & 827E"... epi

Your spare regulator, 1118827, is a regulator for a 1952-55 with 1110018,2785 or 2786 generator. Its a 45 amp gen...the original for a 1940 was a 35 amp gen.and reg..The 827 reg. would permit your present gen. to charge a maximum of 45 amps which would burn it out.The amp setting could be adjusted on the 827 to a maximum setting of 35 amps and then it could be used. Some replacement regs. can be converted by installing the Delco cover - replacing the wrong looking cover.A modern Delco replacement is available but the cover screws go thru the outter flange and not thru the tall top of the cover as the originals did.The original correct 1940-51 35 amp reg is an 1118301 (was a 118201 in 1940 but number changed thru the years)....to much history?
