Yes, The lubricant dispensed in an Alemite lubricator was "Heavy Oil". In todays parlance that is 600W or SAE 160.

I use graphite grease in mine as it sticks to the uni and doesn't throw off like oil does. I use Castrol LMM BTW I've done well over 40,000 miles on the uni in my 34 master and still runs like new. Chris

Some grease and other lubricants may work. The parts were designed to use a flowable lubricant that needs to be able to flow into the parts and not just be coated on the outside. I just caution those with these type vehicles to understand the properties of the lubricants and requirements of the parts. A prime example of improper lubricant damage is use of grease in steering gear. The outer bushing is lubricated through a passage drilled in the case. Chassis grease does not flow through the hole so the outer bushing does not get enough lubrication. Both the shaft and bushing wear resulting in sloppy steering. We have always found steering gear for early 30s Chevys to be in good condition when we find oil in the reservoir and needing part replacement if dry or filled with grease.
