I'm trying to remove my '53 1/2 ton pickup front brake drums and having no luck. They've probably been on there for over a decade. Any tricks?

Is that standard procedure or just because they're being stubborn?

I remove the outer bearing partly to keep it from falling out and getting dirty, also it allows you to wiggle the brake drum to get it off the brake shoes. If it still won't come off you may have to back off the brake shoes to get more clearance.

I bang them with my lead hammer around the sides a few times just to see the shoes might "relax" a bit before working on the adjusters...The adjusters after being un-adjusted for that many years tend to just strip the adjusting "stars" right off...good luck...Tell us how it goes...Kevin

So the wheel bearing trick worked. How do I separate the drum from hub now? Lot's of tapping and banging?

How do I seperate the hubs from the drums?
They are riveted together from the factory. Chop out the rivets. They used to bolt them back together when new drums were insatlled. . Since 1960 they were not fastened together and if you are replacing the drums it is not necessary to bolt them together.

So, can the drum be turned with the hub attached? If not, I'll drill, grind, whatever.
