The first Chevrolet in our family was a '29 Imperial Landau purchased new in Marshall Michigan by my grandparents. The kept it for six months and took it back and traded it in on a Marmon sedan. My grandmother told me it leaked and the cylinders were bored on the bias. That supports what Gene wrote about the cars not being satisfactory due to problems. Didn't buy another Chevrolet until 1949.

Thanks to VCCA Son, just found another one this morning. That makes seven new IL's so far in the last two and a half days. At any rate, I don't think I have your IL listed. Can you PM me the information and I will add it to my card file? I will need your Job Number, Body Number, engine serial number, block casting date and your car serial number if available.

Mike Larson in Vancouver, Washington has one also. Is that the other IL that you are thinking of?

skip: i'm confused. when you refer to IL, are you referring to the 29 Convertible Landau or the 29 Imperial Sedan, both of which had landau bars? regards, mike

I viewed Mike's car many years ago, but at that time it was kinda sorta blocked in a shed and I couldn't get up close to the vehicle.

I just wanted to post a picture of a Canadian built Convertible Landau. Ours came in blue with black fenders. I'm not sure if the tan colour was available up here, but all of the pictures I've seen of Oshawa built ones were blue. I believe this is Gary Van Dyken's car.

Not sure if mine has been counted but here is another one in Arizona. It is at the interior shop now and will be on the road in the next week or two.
Having said that, I am wondering if anyone can tell me the configuration of the rear window trim. I think I had two pieces of metal trim and the wooden piece that goes between the two when I was disassembling the car. I have a new wooden frame and the frame for the outside but I am really scratching my head about what is correct. Is there suppose to be metal on the inside or not? If there is, does anyone know someone that may have a window frame that is available? Would really appreciate your assistance. The piece that I need is the piece that the screws would go through on the inside other car rather than the piece that the screws screw into.

Hi Erik!

Can you PM me the information on your car (i.e. Job Number, Body Number, engine serial number, block casting date, and the car serial number) and I will see if it is on my list? Not sure if it is or not. The info. on the IL at the upholstery shop would be helpful too if you can get it.

By the way, just received info. today on 10 more IL's that have been located. It is amazing how many IL's are still existing, and it seems like more are showing up on a regular basis.

So far, we have approx. 33 IL's on the list that was started about two weeks ago...and that doesn't count the dozens of other IL's that we currently know about. Trying to get info. on those cars as well. And, one VCCA member is working on getting a list of IL's that was made back in the 1970's and there are about 60 more on that list.

From what we can determine so far based on the factory numbers and the body numbers, there were at least 15,423 IL's made in 1929, and that doesn't count exports and etc. We will have a better overview as to the number and percentage of survivors when we get further along with the list of surviving convertible landaus.

Seems like more IL's are showing up on a regular basis. Is there any info. in the ad that we can use on our list? Haven't received Hemmings in many years.

Yep, seems like these things are popping up on a regular basis. The seller says the car is completely restored but it is actually a street-rod.

By the way, as a side note, we are now up to 2,379 convertible landau's built in the Janesville factory in 1929. Still receiving input on surviving convertible landau's built in other factories as well.

Just received information on two other convertible landaus. One was built in the Buffalo, New York factory and the other was produced in the Norwood, Ohio factory. That now makes eight different documented factories that manufactured the convertible landau in 1929.

Up to 33?.

Does that include all of the count included on these 17 pages?

I saw the 1970s list, but I could not tell if it was just ILs. Also, 40 years later, most of that list would have changed hands and therefor might be (as I think that list also) double or triple counted.

In my opinion, a good solid current inventor (on a date certain) as mentioned above would be best.

Just received more input on surviving convertible landaus. Found one that was manufactured in the St. Louis, Missouri factory so that moves the count up to nine different factories (Canada included) in which the convertible landau was made. My list is still growing, and the number of survivors on the list is now pushing 100.

Located another factory that also manufactured the 1929 convertible landau. From an existing car's serial number we have discoved that over seas factories also made the convertible landau, and one of the factories was General Motors Nordiska, Stockholm.

With this new information, the count is now 10 factories that manufactured the convertible landau.

That is great information! Now we know that Holden made the convertible landau as well. Looks like the ad came out in April of 1929 so the Holden convertible landau must have been available thoughout most of the 1929 model year. Very interesting!

Counting Holden, that now makes 11 factories.

Thanks for providing that information!!

Having read the article, I don't see how one could conclude with any certainty that Landau's were built in Australia? It indicates 'all of a sudden' 2,126 Chevrolets are available to meet the "waiting list". This suggests to me that some of this large supply may have landed on their shores from America. It also does not say all the models illustrated were being built by Holden. I understood many such cars were assembled for export in Canada perhaps. Anyway, does anyone have a certified "Holden" tagged Landau or do we know if this model differed in Holden clothes versus American clothes? I'd be careful assuming too much from an AD.
