What is the simplest (and hopefully cheapest) turn signal to add to a 41 Chev? I hope to use existing brake lights and the front parking lights, and I have nothing against the steering mast mounted lever. There are a lot of posts about this but most deal with installation glitches.

Karl,Chev's of the 40's and the filling station have inexpensive switches,but they are universal and thats where all the wiring trouble starts

I installed turn signals on my '41 using a $20.00 switch from Chevs of the 40's. Wiring instructions were included. I installed dual filament sockets in the park light assemblies and used the existing brake lights. The system works fine. One of the neat features about the switch is that it has a green light on the end of the handle that flashes when the switch is on.

My turn signals work great and I didn't have any trouble wiring them. The only downside is my hand get a bit chilly in the winter. rolllaugh

Here in Sweden there are laws about things like turn signals (and oil leaks, uh-oh). You go in to an inspection, they tell you the first thing they see which is sub-par, take a bunch of money, and then send you home to fix it. After waiting a few weeks for the next available inspection time slot, they tell you the next thing which is wrong, and you pay again. Lather, rinse, repeat.
I've ordered a 7-wire turn signal switch. We'll see how that goes.

I am doing the same thing on my '48 as we speak. I have one dumb question. When you have the turn signal on and press on the brakes, does the turn signal override the brake element and keep flashing or is there a steady brake light? Just out of curiosity, are you using a non-cancelling switch? I think I paid about $20.00 for mine also and it is a non-cancelling one. I hope the flashing light on the stalk keeps me alerted that the signal is on. As I recall from the old days, the add-on switches with the self-cancelling rubber wheel were always getting out of adjustment or something and seldom worked any way. If anyone has one of these and it works fine, please don't beat me about the head and shoulders. I am just going from my 74 year old memory. Beamer

If it is wired correctly the signal overides the brake light and it will blink.

I bought the same kind of gadget you probably have, a seven wire mount on the column blinker switch. I'll be changing the sockets of the parking lights for two filament bulbs. Like Chev Nut says, when signalling and braking one brake light will blink while the other will remain steady.
My 53 truck has the self-cancelling blinkers, which have never in my time self-cancelled. I should call them myself-cancelling blinkers.

The blinkers are installed and the car cleared the inspection! The installation was relatively painless, except that the color coding on the wiring diagram and the written directions did not agree with each other. I made a guess and lucked out. Oh, and changing out the sockets on the front parking lights was a bother, what with broken rusty bolts and the like.
I have the good fortune to be wrenching on a relatively unspoiled car, at least unspoiled before I got to it... The original wiring may be in a questionable condition but at least it agrees with the manual.
