My '48 coupe has a '57 235 engine. When I bought it, it came with a "California" chrome air cleaner, one of those little things. I want to put a regular oil bath air cleaner on it. The carb is a Rochester (2.25" throat)and apparently the air cleaner that goes on it has a clamp that tightens around the throat (that is how the present one is fastened on) as there is no threaded rod that comes up out of the throat to screw a thumb screw on. There seems to be a plethora of oil bath air cleaner types and styles but not many have the clamp. I would like one that fits the carb but still has a resemblence to an original '48. Anyone have any ideas what might work? Beamer

Small mistake in my posting above. The diameter of the carb where the air cleaner clamps on is 2 5/8", not 2 1/4". Beamer

My 48 has its original oil bath air cleaner, and, its a clamp on type. I'm running a Rochestor carb as well, but, its on a stock 216, so it may be smaller than yours. If I get a chance, I'll pop off the air cleaner and measure the carb's diameter.

I believe you will find it is 2 1/4". Do you have any way to post a picture or email me one so I can see what an original '48 looks like? It has been a long time since I owned a '48 and I have forgotten. Thanks. Beamer

I see the original air cleaners on eBay quite often...Unfortunately, they're not "Oil Bath"...Maybe for trucks... I have a couple of oil bath filters for the early '50's trucks...Two of them...Two different styles...If you want I could email you pic's...Your welcome to have your choice ...Say maybe $20 each plus shipping...That is if your really want an oil bath filter...Me...? I stay off dusty roads...I avoid anything but pavement...Kevin

Thanks. Oldengineer sent me some pictures. I have my eye on an air cleaner now that I know what a '48 looks like. Beamer
