before i take my front drums to the turning master, does anyone know the minimum thickness of the drum, or rather how much can be shaved off total before it becomes scrap metal? looking at the inside it looks like quite a bit has been removed. i am refering to the front drums on my 38 chev.

Brake drum specifications are not mentioned in the shop manual.The best info. that I can find is in the 1949-53 shop manual.It states that an out-of round drum shold be turned to .060" oversized and .030" oversized lining should be used.Drum should not be turned to more than .060" oversized.The brakes are 11" so I would tend to assume the the drum measured 11" when new.Oversized linings were common years ago as well as arcing the lining to fit the drum.Arcing is a no-no today and most modern replacement lining for the Huck style brake seems to be some what oversized anyway.

As I recall, the specs. for the brake drums on my '68 pickup and on my '69 Impala indicate that they can be .090" oversize and no more. laugh laugh laugh

will have to give that a measure. i wasnt "thinking" about the arc changing, which of course it would. then the linings do not match the contour= brakes not up to par. my drums have some gouges that i am sure are more than .060. guess i will just ask him to tru them up best he can without trying to get rid of deep gouges.
the brakes on this car were stuck when i got it, although the shoes did not match up to the gouges. the linings were ok but everything was all grease! i doubt that it would have stopped very well. they were packing grease(book calls for just a smear of vaseline every couple 1000 miles) into the spindle from the inside, the cork seals were mostly gone so the grease just migrated into the wheel. they called it a restored car tho....
i will see what the shop says tomorrow, may have to consider two new drums. the rear (cheap ones) are ok. thanks for looking for specs.

I had the drums turned. the shop said they had been turned very little if at all. they are now only .050 over standard. she should stop pretty nice now!
