I am not sure if I have a good coil. I have 6 volts going in. What should I have going out?
I sometimes get a spark at the plug and sometimes not. How can I check the distributor and the coil for proper operations. Distributor has a new cap, points, rotter, new Spark plug wires and new Spark plugs.

Coil problems are much less frequent than point and condensers. Also the condenser outer case MUST be grounded. I understand that new points should be okay but unfortunately that is too often not the case. If you short across the points with a screwdriver and get a stronger spark than opening and closing them, then IT IS the points.

Don't know what the voltage coming out of the coil should be, but it should be able to jump a gap of 3/16 inch or so. Here's some other reading on ignition coils you might find helpful:

The voltage sufficient to jump the gap at the spark plug can be anywhere between 4,000-20,000 volts.
