On my 34 1/2 ton I have around 2 volts at the coil with the key on and not running ! Seems like there should be 6 volts ! I have all new wiring and new battery. What volts should be at the coil ? Thanks.

If the points are closed then the voltage at the coil will be low. If the points are open then you should have 6+ volts at the coil. The electricity flow with the points closed is what reduces the voltage.

WOW, it takes nerve to disagree with the Great Texan, but...
Yes, the coil current is pulling down the voltage, but it shouldn't pull down that far unless there's a dirty switch contact, bad connection, or wrong size wire. It's been a while since I owned my '53 coupe, but I think the battery side of the coil would have been within a volt of the battery voltage, if not more. The coil draws only a couple of amps, not enough to cause much drop in a good system. If you only have 2V, I'd bet the spark is pretty weak!

I agree with the Texan if the points are open there will be 6V at the coil each side closed very little.
The reason for this is it a compleated connection and the coil is now charged.

With points open, no current is flowing and voltage will be same as battery on both sides of the coil.

With points closed, the low side of the battery is grounded, zero volts, but the hot side should still be close to battery voltage, unless there is a dropping resistor, as on my '37 ford and 8-N tractor.

The 4-cylinder cars do have a dropping resistor.
