Hi, this is my first time posting (although I've been a VCCA member for quite awhile). I find myself living all the way across the country from my car, which was bought new by my grandfather in 1950, and after years of talking about it my brothers back home are helping me get the restoration started. Hard to be so far away when things are finally happening! Anyway after 60+ years of Pacific NW rain all the chrome needs rechroming . . . my question is, what parts are chrome and what's stainless? I know the bumpers and bumper guards, and I remember the fancy flying hood ornament is chrome too. Anything else?

Also does anyone have a favorite rechromer in the Pac. NW? The car's in Bellingham, but I can get my one of my brothers to box things and send away for rechroming, if need be. Thanks!

Joe

Hub caps are polished stainless. In late 1951 and in early 1952 they tried chrome hub caps. Rusted in the first winter.

I have found that the hubcaps in early 1951 were chrome and the later hubcaps (in 1952 as well) were stainless.

I was under that impression as well... That they were chrome until "Korean Chrome" took over, then the were stainless just to save the chrome. The rusting issue seems odd because there were never any issues with '49- '50 caps rusting, were there? Or was the rusting issue just with a first run of the "Korean Chrome"? My Dad said that our whole car (bumpers&grille) was redone by '55 because the chrome all flaked off of it!

Your impression is correct. 1951 hub caps were chrome and the late 1951 hub caps and the 1952 hub caps were stainless steel. The "Korean Chrome" on the 1952 Chevrolets didn't last long and it was prone to rusting.

I'll have to look it up, but I think I have an Oshawa Service manual that gives instruction for proper care of the "New Chrome". My car was June of 1951, and it had it...
