My 1928 Chevrolet project car did not come with a key but luckily it was in the unlocked position. Has anyone had luck in getting a key made for a lock like this?
On the underside of the steering lock mechanism there are 5 numbers stamped in the metal. They are 2-10-14-16-23. Do these numbers have anything to do with the key cut?

the key code is on the key cylinder, pull it and any locksmith can cut you a new key if they have that year blank available, a large locksmith company will have them in stock. you probably have them, usually 5 number cuts.

Hi, The 28 poses a bit of a problem. It is necessary to remove the steering lock assembly from the column in order to get to the cylinder lock. Once you have identified the pin that retains the cylinder you have to figure out how to remove it. Not an easy chore. Generally requires drilling, and it is critical that you don't drill too deep and into the lock cylinder. Once you have removed the cylinder, make contact with Jarvis Erickson (Listed in the G&D in the Services Section.) There are two types of keys for the 28 lock. One is the single sided and the other is the double sided key. Jarvis can help with both kinds. He will need the number on the side of the LOCK CYLINDER.

I have the steering lock assembly removed. Is the "pin" you are referring to at about the 4 o'clock position on the assembly relative to the ignition lever? If I were to drill the approximate thickness of the assembly wall should I be able to pull the cylinder out? I have another '28 with a double sided key and it fits into this cylinder so I assume it will be the double sided key that is needed.

Hello, I have the same issue no keys but unlocked. I tried to remove lock assembly but I did not want to force lock off column. I can slide it downward about 3/4 " then stops. I think there is a column lock in stopping my progress. Any advice would be sincerely appreciated, L.F.

I just returned from a locksmith in Toledo Ohio with a key for the ignition on my 1928 Chevrolet project car which did not have a key. I took it in yesterday afternoon and got a phone call about 2 hours later saying they have a key for me. When I asked how they did it they told me they got out their ring of all the 1928 Chevrolet double sided keys and started trying each key until they found the one that fit and then cut a key for me. The cost of the service is based on which end of the ring your particular key is located. I lucked out! The bill for mine was $25.
I am now a happy camper until I hit another hurdle on the "28 project.

GR8. You can't beat that price with a stick considering the problems you were facing to remove that lock. Wish I could find a locksmith here with all those keys so they could try it in my Coupe. Maybe I'll have to shop around. Now you can get on to your other restoration duties and wait for the next surprise. I find surprises in my Coupe and it was restored when I bought it.

I had a locksmith make keys for a door lock for one of my other old cars a couple of years ago. This guy just picked the lock and used that information to make a key. I think he only charged me $20 and he spent quite a bit of time doing it. I was impressed.
