I've been back at the hobby room this week. My '31 Landau project is still coming along, but I have started another one. I'm at the point where paint is starting to go on, so it's just as easy to paint all of each colour at one time on both projects. A couple of weeks ago Jane and I hit an antique store in Stratford, and I found this poor beater with a $16 price tag on it. A fairly hard to find Hubley 1932 Chevrolet Phaeton. I've seen them sell for upwards of $40 in the box, but this one was complete, with paint only on the body.

The first step was disassembly. They are held together with lots of little screws and glue. I really got lucky, as the builder had used a hot glue gun for glue! All of the glue came undone as I was stripping the paint, and washing the body in hot water. The body and fenders went into the stripper bag for 5 hours. I use Pinesol cleaner... it takes the paint right off. I used a toothbrush, scribe and hobby knife to clean up what the stripper missed. I really think these kits look beautiful in bare metal... like they are fresh from the miniature Chevrolet factory!

Here it is in the stripper...

Here's what there is to clean with the scribe, knife, and a toothbrush after it comes out if the bag...

The motor was unpainted, so I just had some detail work to do with my Dremal. I ground off the gas lines and plug wires, and got rid of the bad joint and extra nuts on the top of the valve cover. The screw on the exhaust manifold was also puttied over.

Valve cover detail is complete on the left motor... that's right, there's two of them! My next project will remain a secret for now!

Grinding the plug wires off on the right motor...

I also got the frame and suspension ready for priming and paint...

Ditto! Also, a sneak peak on your progress on that Landau Pheaton would be nice... ;-)

I'll try not to leave it too long! That said, it took me two years to build the 1950 convertible that I showed at the hobby show in Flint. I work slow, and will go months at a time without doing anything on them. I really have to be in the mood, or I rush things and mess up! Here's the link for the '31 Landau...

Wow... I just noticed that it's already been a year on this one too! Nothing gets done on them when the real cars are on the road as well... I scale it back in the winter! bigl

Chassis all painted up! Wheels done in Model Master Light Ivory. The fenders are primed, and ready for Tamiya Gloss Black.

It's been a while since I was at the hobby table… but I did lay down a new paint job on my phaeton. Tamyia black fenders and US Naval Blue for the body. Still a lot of detail work to go!

Looking great! So are the tires narrow for the wheel wells? If they are then that one is a Ertl model made in the 90's I have them and stopped when I got the real thing!

Bruce, This is a Hubley from the 1960's. It's 1:20 scale, so is a bit bigger than a regular 1:24 scale Model. I think those Ertl ones were even smaller, like 1:32...

So after Hubley went out of business another model maker got the molds for the 32's at least. You will find some with that name on them. Then in the late 80's early 90's ertl got the molds and made them again. The only difference that I know of is the tires are narrower on the later models. I have the ones which my dad made and my later ones. I'll get some pictures when I get home.

Well, I'd never heard that before! Mine are all of the '60's stuff. Did you build yours, or are they still in the box?

Added a bit of front end chrome today. I don't know what I'm going to do about the head light lenses, as they do not come with clear parts. On my roadster I used Jo-han 1931 Cadillac lenses, but I don't have any more. I'll have to work something out, as I hate the chrome ones that come in this kit.

My old man and I built these nearly 50 years ago.
I still have about a dozen so.
