Can someone explain how to disassemble the coil from the electrolock wire conduit? This fits a 35 pick up. I think it is the same configuration for most mid to late thirties Chevrolets?

The picture is not the greatest but it should serve the purpose.

Thanks, Chris

if i remember right, the cap which is attached to the wire just turns like a jar lid,it has a single groove and a slot.just grab the coil itself and turn it counter clock wise.should come right apart.

Thanks Guy's,
When I tried to turn counterclockwise I encounted a "stop". This must be the tab that the photo shows that needs to be lifted to allow the top to turn. Will try later today to pry it with a thin blade of sorts.

hey halfton
it's supposed to stop now just pull it off.
it's not threads,it's just like the slots on your head lights bulbs>>>turn and pull.

When you lift the tab as shown in the picture , you can pull the cap straight off , you do not need to twist it at all , as twisting will distort the indentations in the cap which hold it in position.

howdy jack
i just checked my coil on my 1935 truck.
i don't know if these coils are different or not.
i beleave my coil and ignition switch are origanal.
halfton has a 1935 like mine.
mine is just like a head light bulb,it has slots and pins
turn coil counter clockwise and cap and conduit pulls straight off.
it's a tight fit and he probably has rust under his.
need to rock it back and forth and pull straight out.

So is your coil the same as in the picture posted in the first post of this thread?

Yes the coil is the same. And here it is disassembled.
There we go. The amount of knowledge of this forum is great! Thanks to all.
One more question.
I am guessing the wire is frayed beyond use. Look at the Electro Lock barrel. There are two tabs that seem to hold the barrel together. If you bend these back can you access the area where the wire is terminated to replace it?

Don't count on getting very far after you bend those tabs. Do you have a key?

Hi Mike,
That's what I was thinking. Most of this configuration helps prevent someone from "hot wiring" the ignition.
I do not have a key as my reason for disassembly is to send it to Jarvis Erickson to re key.
Once I have a key what can I do to replace the wiring?

I don't know how to replace the wire. I have a switch on my workbench that is partially apart. I can't tell if the wire needs to pull through the conduit to get the switch apart.
If you have the original locking door handle for your truck, The key code stamped into it's base should match the code for your ignition switch. Get me that number and I will cut a key for you to try in your switch. Worst case is you have a key for your door.

howdy again

ok here's my 2 cents worth of what i would do.
and i just went threw this key thing.
i took the whole wire, conduit and ignition switch
down to my local lock smith.
the lock smiths know how to take the ignition switch apart.
at least mine did,and show you how to put it back together.
when you have the switch apart i beleave you can disconnect the wire inside the switch and pull it out of the conduit and put a new one in.
these switches are also programable,if we can use that term on 1935 hardware.they have numbered tumblers inside with numbers on them and the lock smith can make you a new key custom to how he sets up the tumblers.
my lock smith did this all with 2 brand new briggs and stratton
keys which are correct for 20 bucks.

Jeff,
If I hand over 2 cents for that advice, will I be getting any change back?

The Filling Station has a detailed rebuilding guide for replacing the wire and restoring the switch. It's for the '37-'39 electrolock but having seen the guide the basic construction is very similar looking at the pics above.
