Does the ol RJH-08 carb (updraft) have a "replacement" out there? My carb works but my gas mileage is around 10-12 mpg. I have tried most all the suggestions from all the members to improve the mileage with no noticeable change....I somehow feel the updraft carbs dump more fuel on the street than goes into the manifold !!

There are replacement carburetors for the Carter. Most were made in the 40s and 50s by Johnson, Marvel, Tillotson. If you find a good one then they work fine. No one I know of makes or sells rebuild kits for them. If you get a knowledgeable rebuilder they should be able to rebuild to get ~15-18 mpg. Depends on your driving habits.

Thanks ----I am not sure I understand about the adapter, not that familiar with aluminum stock or how to fabricate but you made it sound pretty easy---even for an old woodworker---lol! The carb looks real nice and not to pricey---gotta like that! Hey,I am also the owner of a 1976 Alfa Romeo Veloce Spider---purchased it new in 77---just turned 50,000 miles---runs like it was new !! Thanks Again,Jay

Hi Jay,

You can find vendors selling aluminum stock, I meant to say 1/2 inch plate, but I still think 5/8 in thickness would work best. Its almost the same as woodworking, fabricating a adapter plate. I believe I used a 1 1/8 in. hole cutter (29 mm.) and made a template with gaskets, etc. Its easy.

A Alfa Romeo owner since 1977,,, Whoa....thats fantastic. You must have known Bobcor, back in the day. Do you still have the original Spica fuel injection pump? I should probably continue this offline, its not exactly relevant....

The Zenith carb has been a winner on both my 1928 Chevys and 1930 Chevy.

Hi knapp31,

No, its a different model, the Zenith 14991, which supposedly better accepts a air cleaner unit, atmospherically balanced...

This is where I purchased my carbs. good service.

I have one of the adapters for this change over. I pulled this off one of mine extra engines years ago but the carb was no good and like they said no parts avaiable for those carbs. This is the one that changes the bolt pattern from a angle to straight front to rear. It measures 1 3/8 inches across the flange both sides and is 3/4 inch thick. Chuick

Fellas,

I have taken a link from Ray Dean's excellent blog, where he both describes and illustrates his fitting a Zenith to a 4 cyl Chevy. You have to make the adapter for the six a bit differently, but I thought his articles would be v. helpful.

Hats off to Ray,

Off course, if you already have a adapter in hand, then you are good to go...

Ciao,

Jay
