Exactly how does that work? If you're selling an old chevy and the buyer wants a 3rd party inspection because he's hundreds of miles away, that's understandable. Who exactly would do something like that? Would the inspector be liable to the buyer for a paid inspection? I've bought a lot of new cars and sold a lot of used ones but I've never been involved with something like that.Would the inspector give a percentage evaluation on every aspect of the car and also a total point grade and value? I've seen this done on TV concerning million dollar cars but not on a normal low cost vehicle. Just curious.

Sometimes on car ads it says the paint is a 6 out of 10 or something like that, is that how it works? Also how much would a buyer pay for this service?

Thanks. That's what I needed to know, but this sounds like a seller using the inspection to sell the vehicle. I've got a buyer wanting to hire someone to do this. I'm not paying for an inspection but would be more than glad to have anyone inspect the car. I'm looking at a car in Texas,I might pay for an inspection if it all works out.

I looked at a 1970 LS-5 Chevelle many moons ago for a fellow VCCA member down near Springfield. He was in Baltimore. I just combed over the car like I was inspecting it for purchase, and the owner was aware that I was doing it for another party. It was fine, and worked just as if I was buying for myself. It worked just fine and I'd do something like that again if I was purchasing a car that was far away. As long as you're cool with it and are along for any test drives and the guy doesn't disappear with your '38, you'll be fine :)

Wouldn't your local chevy dealer do the inspection for a minimal fee? Might be worth the inquirey.

The car isn't leaving without me being a co-pilot , and the car isn't leaving my driveway for the last time without me having a cashiers check or cash. The chevy dealer has offered me what I'm asking on a trade in on a new vette order in august but that trade in price is not a real price.Even if you do save the tax by using a trade in, you can get a better deal for cash on arrival . I've tried that before in 2009. The best deal on buying ANY new car is to find a BROKER that can take the new car away from the dealer because he hasn't met his sales goal. The dealer hates these guys. The problem is you may not find the exact car you're wanting. Brokers are the vultures of the car industry. They have no overhead and make everyone mad but GM and the buyer. If the dealer lets this happen very many times he may lose his dealership. This is not good for the dealer or his sales force.

It's none of my business what you do, but we can all be very leary of a Cashier's Check. I've known of 'em having a "Stop Payment" done on 'em. They are not nearly as "tamper proof" as most think.

Yeah, a lot of money changes hand using Cashier's Checks but they are not "fool-proof" these days (perhaps they were in the past). The only way I'll take 'em now is at a bank with the bank giving me the cash-in-hand with the bank taking full responsibility for the Cashier's Check. I don't mean deposited to my account. The bank can take that back from my account. I mean Cash-In-Hand (my hand) WITH the provision the bank is satisfied with and responsible for the check! 'Just my $.02.

You are right about being copilot. Unless they've changed the law recently, if one tries your car, and doesn't bring it back, it is classified as Breach of Contract instead of theft. I know of two cases locally of this. One, a late model Corvette, was never recovered. Another was just an ol' used car later located weeks later in Kentucky in very poor condition.

If they try your car, go with 'em.

A cashiers check only certifies that the amount of the check was on deposit or covered by a credit agreement with the bank at the time the check was issued. It in no way is guaranteed by the bank. They can be cancelled or have a stop payment at any time. They are essentially the same as a personal check except that the bank verified funds were there to back it at one time.

Bank checks can be guaranteed by the bank. Or a personal or company check covered by a bank letter of guarantee is good as long as the documents are actually issued by the bank and not forged or altered.

While we are talking about security of funds. The bank can take funds from any of a person's accounts to satisfy and obligation. So switching funds from one account to another does not protect them. Transferring to another financial institution does provide a level of protection.

I demanded $38k in cash for a boat I sold about 10 years ago because the buyer was a known shady character. He paid me and I went straight to the bank to depoist it. The first thing that happened was the bank handing me a form to fill out because it exceeded the $10k rule for depoisting cash. I filled it out and had to explain where the money came from. I put a sale of a boat. That didn't work without a copy of a title or registration being attached. In Tennessee boats don't have a resistration or title. The owner of the numbers on the side of the boat shows they own it. If you get stopped by the police or Tn wildlife that's what you better have because that's on their computer. To make this story short...DON'T depoist more than 10k in your bank in a 24 hour period. You can deal in checks in any amount but not cash.If you work for the government it could affect your clearence if there's a problem. The idea is to monitor drug money. Call your bank and ask about this, big brother is standing right behind you.

I ask about a cashiers check being stopped at my credit union. They said it is possible, but the form you fill out to do that envolves a crime of some type. It can't be stopped because you changed your mind on a deal or a debt.It even states the liablity of the person stopping the check if what he states is not true. The person recieving the cashiers check can sue the bank and the person if it is for any other reason.

If you want a 100% sure thing either get a electronic transfer from bank to bank or a western Union moneygram (which is expensive).Paypal will not get envolved except for the depoist.

Cash is KING for sure BUT would you email someone in Detroit or East L.A. and say I'll met you at McDonalds with $40,000.00 in cash? If I was going to give someone I didn't know a large amount of cash we're going to be in a BANK, then we can swap paperwork and he can have his cash. You can always say you want a Bill of sale that's notorizedand use that as an excuse.

I do 3rd party inspections, we call it "pre-Purchase Appraisal" and in these cases only work for the buyer. I'm an agent for "Auto Appraisal Group, Inc." the website is www.autoapprasial.com. On a Pre-Purchase Appraisal" I will take about 50 to 100 photographs and key in on dents, scratches and things that do not look right. I take a paint meter and record the mil thickness of the paint on each square foot of the car. If it is more then 30 mils then the assumption is bondo. I have the seller take me for a ride and document if the car pulls right or left, how it shifts, how the engine performs, how the brakes work, etc. Look at the color of the exhaust. Then do a 10 page inspection - checking each light for working, not working, horn, radio, heater, A/C, windows, door locks. Evaluate the condition on a 1 to 5 point scale of every section of the body - paint, body alignment, bodywork, trim, glass and the same on the interior. I check all the fluid levels under the hood and notate the clarity of the fluids. If a rack is available I'll ask the seller to use it, if not I crawl under the best I can. I measure the wheelbase on each side of the car, if it differs by more then 1/2 inch then we know something is wrong. This procedure takes about two hours. I will talk to the buyer before the inspection and ask him what details I need to focus on. After the inspection I call the buyer and tell them what I saw. I upload the photos to a website so he can see them that day. I will also use various research books and the internet to learn as much about this car as I can. I will take the data plate codes and document if they agree with the car. I did a 1969 Chevelle SS 396 last summer and the seller said it was original paint and original interior with only 21,000 original miles. The car looked original to me but was just too nice to be. The paint meter readings made it clear the car had been repainted. The data plate code said green interior, the car had black. The heads and valve covers were not orininal on the 396. It has been about 50/50, half of them buy the car and half of them do not.

The question - is the appraiser/inspector liable - answer: the Auto Appraisal Group has errors and omissions insurance.

Not for the "Auto Appraisal Group", but our inspection for a Pre-Purchase appraisal is quite extensive. The fee depends on the type of car. We charge more for Corvettes's and high dollar classic cars. The starting point for a "Pre-Purchase Appraisal is $350 plus mileage for the agent. It is not cheap, but the buyer will be happy with the extensive information.

I don't blame anyone for asking for an inspection if they were buying a car. In fact that's a good idea if you think it's worth $450, but I can't see the seller paying anything.I would never try to make someone pay for a car if they truely made me believe they were unhappy with unless they tried to offer me a lower price.I guess the seller could keep the $500 depoist according to ebay rules but that would be pretty underhanded if the buyer was sincere about being interested but was disappointed after seeing the car. I would never keep the $500 and do anything like that to a person who was trying to be honest with me. I don't need the money bad enought to cheat someone. He can have his money if he choses to not buy the car. I think you can tell about what people are up to in just a few minutes.

One guy wanted to drive the car 25 miles by himself. I told him if I couldn't ride along it wasn't going to happen.

Interesting thread.

Before I bought my '28 AB Canopy Express, the previous owner's family got it appraised by a supposed expert. The value was set way too high, but luckily I formed a good relationship with the family and was able to buy it at a more reasonable price. They (the seller) paid for the appraisal.

I recently sold my commute car to a broker that advertised on craigslist. I met him in the parking lot of my bank so I could walk right in and deposit the money ($6000 in cash). I didn't sign over the pink slip until after the bank teller verified that all the bills were legitimate.

Cheers, Dean

"Financial institutions file more than 15 million "suspicious activity reports" every year, according to Treasury. Banks, for instance, are required to report all personal cash transactions exceeding $10,000, as well as suspected incidents of money laundering, loan fraud, computer hacking or counterfeiting."

Steve said, "One guy wanted to drive the car 25 miles by himself. I told him if I couldn't ride along it wasn't going to happen."

Steve,

Why not? Don't you have good insurance? After all, who wants to try out a car with the owner a-sitting there a-bending your ear and making you miss noting the shaking front end or noisey engine? Nobody.

Get a copy of the dude's driver's license, give him a copy of your approval for him to drive the car and go in the house and make some hot chockolate, get the newspaper, sit back in the easy chair and read about the sequestration, et al.

Give him 50 bucks to fill up the car and have some lunch on you. If it breaks down to just call you. No problem. Mercy, don't you trust anyone anymore? What is the country coming to? No wonder you can't unload that thing. You know what, I don't think you have any marketing skills a-tall.

Tell me that that car wasn't the 38 and you nixed a possible deal (at your price) because you were being so a-scared he wouldn't bring that thing back. Insurance, think insurance. Stolen car, totaled. Collect. Piece o-cake.

Maybe the dude wanted to see how fast that cheatin' 56 powerplant would move that green machine.

I'm surprised and astonished at your distrust in your fellow man. Did he show you da money? Mercy and heavens to Betsy!

In my case, I would have told the guy that if he wanted to drive the car, that would be just fine but that I wasn't going to go. Just him. Would too!

I can put everyone I trust in my standard cab Silverado truck ,and still have plenty of room. grin
Why would he NOT want me to go? If it were Beamer,Tiny or you or someone I knew I might do that, if some guy rings the doorbell and says he wants to try the car out..it ain't gonna happen without me in the passengers side of the seat. Sorry, that's just the way it is.
How bout letting me try that 41 convert out, I "MIGHT" buy it.I'll be right back..will too.
In fact ,I wish a 38 coupe owner would drive mine,I'd like to hear the pros and cons of the experience.

BTW..I'm insurance poor.Another losing deal.I haven't made a claim on anything in decades.

I heard that! Good point.

On the 41 project. Stand by. Going to work on that dang thing is tantamount to looking at the KP roster and finding your name there twice in less than two weeks. As true as I am to 41s I'm beginning to hate the thing.
I have no vision left in me.

Somebody may be getting a deal real soon and I have no doubt I'll feel like I just unloaded a boat. Actually, I do have one of those for sale. A 20 foot Grady White. I'll probably toss that in to make the 41 deal partially attractive. OSHA has a term called "attractive nuisance." Works for me.

Best,
