1950 235,new rings and the gaps are correct, new battery and starter is good.Is this normal. It is very hard to turn over by hand using the fan blade. Do i just have to get it started and run a while to brake in the rings?

thanks
pete

I have heard several people say they had to tow a rebuild to start it. It has never been the case for me though.

If you can turn it with the fan blade, I would think the starter should be able to start it. You could boost it with 12 volts for the first start up.

Pete,

I'm referring you to the other post with a similar question. It's "Using a 12 Volt Battery on a 6 Volt System."

Be careful not to bend any blades while doing so...You didn't mention if the spark pugs were out...

I always recommend starting the engine to "break-in" the rings, there Pete... laugh Just kidding, Good luck with the motor...I think you'll be OK...Kevin

It is normal not being able to turn over an engine with new rings, etc. with the fan.
If the starter is OK boost with a 12 V battery. Make sure no eletrical things are "o" including the dome light. Disconnect the "jump" as soon as engine starts.
Run engine at a good fast idle when it does start.

Building oil pressure by prelubing is also a good idea and may ease the ability to turn over. Also if using 6 volts be sure the battery cables are of sufficient size. 2/0 to 4/0 is recommended.
