Most old antique chevrolet owners don't talk much about gas mileage, I know I don't. No more than I drive ,it really doesn't concern me, but today ,here in Tennessee, a new gas mileage subject was on the news. VW in Chattanooga has announced their new car that gets unbelievable mileage.

Before you click on the link ..take a guess what would be unbelievable.

This is on every news station in the state. Do you think this is really possible?

My best guess is my old coupe gets about 12-15 miles to the gal.

Facts on this car appear to be slightly different depending on where you read them but anything over or at 200 mpg is defiantly a long awaited and welcomed game changer.

It is pretty stodgy on acceleration and as a body tech I can tell you that repairs on this car may would not be cheap. (aluminum repair requires a special facility)

Curious at what this 2-seater will $ell for?

The magic question is the same question that Volt owners wanted to know. How long will the charge last? The volt will run 38-39 miles on a charge (IF) you don't use the AC or the Heat. If you do either of those two things it get more like 19 miles on a charge. That's a deal breaker. Why even have the electric source if that's all it will do. At $44k for a volt, that's just insane.
The VW may be alot different than the Volt...I hope so. I'd say it will be at least $45k when it hits the dealership. Someone needs to improve fuel mileage and give up on the hy-bred type cars. Just my 2 cents..smiles

Wow $45k or more for a car... i'll never be able to do it. At $4 a gallon $45k would get me to work and back for the next 22.5 years. chevy

Gas has doubled in four years. I won't count on $4 a gal gas.

The ol' '41 gets 15-16 mpg - geared too low.

Even at todays rip-off prices, if most folks who trade cars to get a bit more mileage would put a pencil to it, they would not trade! It almost never makes economic sense.

Hydrogen is the way to go but the oil companies and the "powers that be" will never stand for it. Hydrogen can easily be generated at the location where it is injected into the vehicles. Just imagine the distribution savings over the ways gasoline is currently handled - not to mention the other savings involved. They now have us by the throat and laugh all the way to the bank!

I was waiting for that... lol! Might have to stock up now and buy a bunch of Stabil talk

.... or have to install a diesel and go the used fry oil route!

It'll be interesting to see what gas mileage this VW thing actually gets with a couple of 300 pound people aboard - if they can even get in it.
My 48 Fleetmaster seems to get 18 - 20 MPG, near as I can tell, when I run her on a fairly long trip cruising at 55 - 60.

What hurts this type car is turning the AC or Heat on, this changes everything! The Volt went from 38 miles to 19 miles as far as range goes. They show this VW in the mid east(with the windows UP ) on a test run . How hot was the cabin temp.? No hills,no traffic, driver no passenger. The car was driving about 30 miles an hour.

Keep in mind that 19 miles will cover the vast majority of trips that most people drive.
Also, the Volt has the gas engine which extends the range to thousands of miles, assuming you stop and fill the gas tank when needed. Sort of like my 1950 Chevrolet!

Just want to throw my mileage into the mix.

- 1927 LM 1 ton truck (with cattle cage erected - 'Lurch') - 10 mpg on a 100 mile trip done on Halloween 1996. See
https://vccachat.org/ubbthreads.php/galleries/271444#Post271444 for a picture.

- 2005 Toyota Prius - routinely 50 mpg. I had 155,000 miles on the car when I sold it last year. I paid $24K for it in 2005.

Cheers, Dean

19 miles may cover a lot of folks trips, but after each 19 mile trip you're down until you wait for several hours to go 19 more miles. But, you're right ,if you just forget about the electric part of the car,you still can go for hundreds of miles on the snowmobile type gas engine. I think I'd rather keep my $45k.When I took a test ride at the chevy dealer, I ask how much was it to dispose of the HUGE battery if the need ever came. He didn't know, but the Volt blog says it is in the thousands of dollars. The battery cost about $10k

OK........ with all this hybrid and E-car crap we see today, why don't they use Diesel locomotive technology in cars?

I know they now use direct injection, but why not the 2 stroke turbo design for generating electric only and powering 4 separate motors?

The 2 stoke diesel is much more efficient at burning fuel than gas and 4 stroke diesels in that,
1- Compressed air purges all residual exhaust out of the cylinder prier to combustion.
2- More power than 4 stroke (power stroke on every revolution)

Just seems like this set-up would serve as a better solution to the rising price of fuel.
