SOLUTION FOUND

Turns out that the guy who rebuilt the gearbox in my 1929 for me had put the speedo drive gear (on the tailshaft yolk) and the driven gear (in the universal joint housing) from a 1928 into my 1929 gearbox. He didn't actually realise that they were different.

Here is the speedo driven gear from a 1929 / 30. They are cut one way...

And here is the speedo driven gear from a 1928, you will see that the gears are cut the opposite way to the one shown above. This is the one that was taken out of my gearbox.

Of course the speedo drive gear on the tailshaft yolk was also fitted the wrong way around for a 1929.

So there you go... you can put a 1928 speedo drive and driven gear into a 1929 and it will turn your speedo backwards. Who knew!

A 28 speedometer is driven off the right (passenger) side of the transmission.

Yes mate, that was something that we've already pointed out and discussed, but as I've found out; the '28 driven gear can be put into a '29 housing and it will drive the speedo cable out of the LH side of the box. However because the gear is cut the opposite direction the speedo will run backwards.

So you ran the speedo backwards so Dad won't know you had the jalopy out last night on a date with that cute girl in class. Got cough did you?
