SOLUTION FOUND
Turns out that the guy who rebuilt the gearbox in my 1929 for me had put the speedo drive gear (on the tailshaft yolk) and the driven gear (in the universal joint housing) from a 1928 into my 1929 gearbox. He didn't actually realise that they were different.
Here is the speedo driven gear from a 1929 / 30. They are cut one way...

And here is the speedo driven gear from a 1928, you will see that the gears are cut the opposite way to the one shown above. This is the one that was taken out of my gearbox.

Of course the speedo drive gear on the tailshaft yolk was also fitted the wrong way around for a 1929.
So there you go... you can put a 1928 speedo drive and driven gear into a 1929 and it will turn your speedo backwards. Who knew!
