Hello everybody! Were the 1939 grills chromed or were they more a polished stainless steele????I'm getting a good used grill, but it needs "polishing up." Should I have it chromed or see about just polishing it, as it is????Any help would be appreciated. Best wishes

All 1939 grilles were chrome plated. The chrome job was not of the best quality.Would clean it up with an SOS pad and water. The back (or top) of each bar was painted. The early '39's were black and late were cream.Replacement grilles made during WWII were painted all light gray.I assume that you are refering to the center main grille and not the side fender grilles.
The original 1938 grilles were chrome and in the '50's and up Chevrolet made the 1938 passenger car replacement grilles in both chrome and stainless.

Just a note-The center moulding and the upper mouldings are stainless steel.... Also checked my car today-The center baffle lower bolt is the same one used to fasten the grille at the bottom-just to the left of center.(it actually a sheet metal s-c-r-e-w)

Thanks Mike and Gene...helpful as always and appreciated...Gene, you mentioned "the back (or top)" of each bar was painted...did you mean both the backs and tops were painted??? Best wishes!

The area that I am refering to is the horizontal -or- top of each bar---or between the bars as the top surface is all that normally seen.

chevgene: my 39 sedan delivery, when i got it 30 yrs ago, had a painted grill. i hade it chrome plated but there was no chrome under the paint before i sent it to the chrome plater. was it a service replacement grill?. the old sed del also came with two extra grills that appeared to have never been used and one was chrome and other was painted black like the one that was installed on the sed del when i bought it. ??? thanks , mike

All 1939's had chrome grilles when new....as I mentioned during WWII many new replacement parts were painted a light gray color rather than being chrome plated. This was due to material shortages. Most commonly found were painted door and trunk handles, grilles, parking and tail lamp rims and emblems.A new or well preserved painted part makes a good core for rechroming as they are seldom pitted.
