I was looking at the classifieds on Hemmings motor news and saw this 1948 Chevrolet Fleetmaster Convertible. My first thought was the price seems way to high. But I could be wrong. What do you think??? 1948 Chevrolet Fleetmaster Convertible

I think the price is too high but if you purchased a so-so car for $20,000 and restored it you would probably have that much invested when done.

You see some nice cars over there @ Hemmings...But did you expect to find something you could afford...?

Nice looking car! As noted, a few things I'd pick about, but it looks pretty good. Maybe I need to call Hagerty and increase my insurance. :-)

Dale, Don't get carried away. Please note the cavaet about OBO. The owned is obviously looking for less than the asking price. I doubt that yours would come even close to measuring up to this fine, detailed machine. So... I imagine the 25K or so insurance you probably have on yours right now is about right. After all, it's not a 41. Just kidding you. Charlie BTW: I'm sure Gene noted the upside down stabilizer bolts.

Good point, Charlie - about the OBO. :-) As a comparison, last fall the 1948 Convertible used to pace the Indy 500 was for sale (both in the G&D & Hemmings) and he was looking for mid-40s. Don't know if it sold or not. I did let the GM Heritage Center know about just in case they were interested in adding it to their collection. Never did hear one way or the other.

1. Probably nothing wrong with trying to hit 'home run' with high dollar asking price. Not likely it's a $50k plus car in the real market.
2. The 48 Indy car Decarter mentions is likely the one from CA Bay Area. Same guy had the bright yellow '48 convertible with CC wood kit and 350 w. 4 speed for sale for years. If the Indy car isn't any better than the yellow one was....
3. Gene's comment is right on the money. (Nothing unusual about that!!)
I could write a page about dollar ideas for that 48 Aristech posted; but then I'd just be tired. And who really cares anyway.....
Bill.

At least for me when someone lists a car that is kind of high on the price,I usually just pass on it.I normally don't want to dicker in that situation.I feel that if I make an offer that is too low,it might insult the owner and I don't wish to do that. Why does everyone selling a car that they have restored think that they are going to recuperate their cost? If it takes you 15K to restore a car, then that's what it costs.I have heard it is more realistic to expect a percentage of the cost, but, that's it.Just my 2 cents.....
