I'm trying to help get my uncles 62 6-cyl on the road. Right now we're focused on the alternator. We are only getting 12 volts out of the alternator and we even got a replacement alternator thinking we should have more than 12 volts out of the alternator, but the replacement was the same with 12 volts coming out.
What am I missing here?

Actually researching, I'm wondering if this car originally came with a generator?

A 1962 had a generator , not an alternator. ?????????? although an alternator was a rare option.

most all 62 chevys i'vee seen had generators, although a friend bought a 62 409/380 hp engine out of a junk yard, in early '63, that had an alternator. no 53-62 corvettes had altenators. they didn't make the corvette scene till 63. mike

This might be the start of my problem, because I've also noticed there is not an external voltage regulator under the hood anywhere and I believe the alternator that is in the car is not an internal regulator alternator.
It might turn out to be someone converted to an alternator but didn't complete the job or do it correctly.

If the alternator has multiple wires then it requires an external regulator. Don't know when the first internal regulators were used but it was after '62.

If the alternator has a hole in the back it would have an external regulator. If it has a hole on the side it is internal regulator

it looks like an external regulated alt. Would an external regulated alt. only put out 12v if the regulator wasn't connected.

It's confirmed- it's an externally regulated alternator...and there is not a voltage regulator in the car anymore. We're now going to try to get an internal regulated alternator.

I have a '64 Belair, with a 6 cyl., and it has an original external regulator and alternator. Look at 1964 parts info. for replacments and everything will fit perfectly on your '62 and function properly.

In '62, the alternator was standard equipment on air conditioned cars and optional on the other motors "except" the 409. (and the 409 was never offered with A/C in '62) Verne

When I was in high school and working at a Standard station in 1970 one of the guys had a 62, I think Belair that was an old highway patrol car and it had an alt, they said that it came that way.

My recollection is the first year alternators were Standard equipment was 1963, and they did have an external voltage regulator in the system. Even the later versions with internal regulators had more than one wire. There was a heavy wire at the back of the alternator fastened to an insulated stud that was 12 volts from the battery. At the top circumference there was provision for a two wire plug that was the field terminal for the internal regulator. I sem to recall that only cars with factory A/C came with alternators. There must be current sent to the field terminal for the alternator to work, it must excite the field when the ign is switched on.
