Rebuilding a 1945 chevrolet 235 ,reinstalling rod to piston wrist pins and unable to find correct torque specs,according to the bolt size 3/8-24 about 35lbs.also having difficult time finding way to hold on to assembly to set torque ,afraid to secure the assembly to set torque,may tweek the rod ?Any ideas ,oh yes I dont have a piston vise.

Clamp the rod in a vise with wood blocks protecting the rods from the vise jaws. If as close to the piston as possible, you should be okay. If your vise is large enough then you can clamp the piston instead. Best clamped inline with the pin.

Do you believe the torque is ok unable to find this reference in any old manuals?

I believe the wrist pins are hollow, correct? So the way I do it is put a long tapered drift in the vice and silde the wrist pin over it. Then you can do up the bolt with ease.


My 1951 1 Ton is now on the road! My 38 Master 4 Door is also now on the road .

Thank you for both of your suggestions ,I put a 9/16 pin through the wrist pin as Old216 had said and worked very nice . I used the torque specs for a 3/8-24 grade 5 bolt 35lbs,dont think it will come lose.

Shop manual says 25 to 35 Foot pounds.
