Hello Everyone,

Would anyone be able to post a pic of a trans mount for a '36 chevy 1/2 ton pick-up ?

I'm helping an older gentleman make repairs on his pick-up and I had to remove the trans mount because it is held to the trans by the lower bolts to the torque tube. I had to pry it out and now it won't go back in. The mid-mounts at the bell housing look to be okay so I'm wondering if the mount is the correct one. I don't think I should have to force it back into position.

I would also ask if you can take pics of the e-brake flex cable at the frame mount and the backing plate so I can show him what it is suppose to look like. This is another part I think is wrong for this truck. I believe they are too short.

Thank you for any info the membership can provide.

Here's a photo of the mount on my 36 FB pickup:

As you can see, it bolts between the crossmember and the bottom rear of the trans with a total of 4 bolts. If your friend's mount does not look like this, it is the wrong one.

The correct mount is shown in a drawing at Steele Rubber for Chevrolet part #368451. They do not sell the mount (and they are VERY hard to find), and only do re-vulcanization of existing mounts.

To install or remove the mount, you should use a floor jack to lightly support the transmission before loosening or tightening the bolts!

Thank you WinoWally,

The mount appears to be like yours except his is not molded. Someone may have modified it to come apart at some time in the past so the rubber could be replaced. Below is the steps I took to remove the mount......

The first step I performed was to remove the bolts at the crossmember, then placed a floor jack with a block of wood under the trans and took the weight off the mount so I could remove the two bolts holding the mount to the "ball cover" .

Unbolted and slid the rear differential back so I could slide off the "ball & cover" and replace the missing cork gasket in the cover.

Put everything back together but the mount would not go back in place.

I looked at the pics on Steele's site but they are drawings and don't show enough detail to show me how thick the rubber is. They also show replacement pads but again, it's a drawing that shows length and width but not thickness.

Would it be possible for you to tell me how thick the rubber is between the trans part of the mount and the crossmember part of the mount ??

Dave,

I'm having a real hard time understanding what your trans mount looks like, and why it won't fit back where it came from. How about a photo or 2 from you? If you don't know how to post a photo, you can send it to me via a private message--just click on the "WinoWally" link to the left of this posting to see my email address.

(I assume this truck has a 4-speed since you pulled the rear end back to get the cork gasket in place without splitting the u-joint.)

Make sure the mount is bolted on the OUTSIDE of the ball retainer. If the new cork gasket is too thick it will place the retainer too far back for the holes to line up.

I don't have pics but it looks like yours and the truck is a 3 speed. I removed the rear diff. because there was not enough room to slide the "ball" off the torque tube. I'll post pics later in the week. I'll be going over to his house to help with a few more small repairs.

Dave,

Mine WAS a 4-speed when I removed, revulcanized, and refitted the mount, but since then I've replaced it with a 3-speed and the same mount installs easily on both. You must have something out-of-line or you're not lifting the trans enough to let the mount align with the x-member holes and trans bolt holes.

Anxious to see your photos. We can address the e-brake cable questions after we deal with the tranny mount!

Off to watch the Super Bowl. Go Niners!!

Wally,
Sorry to have seen your niners didn't make it.

Up-date on the '36 pick-up........

the mount wouldn't go back in because I didn't realize the pieces of rubber that my friend replaced were thicker than the original ones. So he made an adjustment and it is now close enough to install.
