i have located the brake light switch on the frame- my problem is that i can not figure out how it is wired. there are 2 wires running to the tail lamp. one i figure is for tail and license plate ligt and the one that runs thru the switch is for brake light. the problm is when i removed the bulb it is only a single fillimant bulb. the socket seems to be for a single filliment. i know the tail light works as i checked it before i started to remove wiring, until i found the brake light switch and checked the wiring diagram i thought these cars had no brake light. any help on this would be great-
thanks
Joe

Your tail light has two single filament bulbs and sockets. One socket is for the tail light bulb and the other socket is for the brake light bulb.

A hot wire from the light switch goes to the stop light switch. The other wire from the stop light switch goes to the brake light. A wire from the tail/dome light terminal on the back of the light switch goes to the tail light.

Check out your wiring diagram since it shows how the tail light, brake light and the stop light switch are wired.

Thanks JD , but now i am really confussed. there are only 2 sockets in my taillight one faces up and takes the 6V version of an 1156 bulb, the other faces down and when the bulb is installed it prtudes slightly out the bottom of the housing to illuminate the tag. am i missing a socket? also there are only 2 terminals on the back of the housing. could be that the upright bulb is the brake and the tag bulb also works as tial light.

Joe,
The bulb that protrudes slightly out the bottom of the housing is the tail light. It also illuminates the license plate. Uses a 63 bulb.

The other in the upper center is the brake light. It is switched on and off by the brake switch. The assembly is grounded so only two wires are needed.
