took my steering box apart to clean,paint and inspect bearings etc.the worm gear seemed worn so i am replacing it with another shaft and gear. is there a certain way the steering shaft goes back in to line up with the sector gear andy

The shop manual will provide the information you need. There is a centering mark on the worm at the very top of the shaft. Hard to see some times but that mark will help mate the worm and sector. Imanaged to rebuild the box install new worm and sector and get it all done in one try, amazing!

the one i took out had that mark but the one putting back in does not is there any way the where the worm gear and shaft are pressed together to get another mark or starting point

If you carefully measure and align the two shafts, you should be able to put match the mark on one with a mark you make on the other.
