Does anyone ever pay a tax just to keep their old chevy? I've never lived anywhere that had a tax on a car unless it was at the purchase. Amazing

Local tax for registration in N.H. on my 51 chev is $4.00 and the state fee is $6.00 for the plates. Its based on value when new and then depreciated to a minimum which is probably whats above. What do you pay for your plates? N.H. requires annual registration of vehicles and the plate does not go with the vehicle. If you sell your old car you can transfer the current plate to another if you have purchased one.

Do you get a bill or just list it as personal property? Does the value /tax amount increase or stay the same each year? Just curious how that works. So if you bought a $50k antique car you would owe quite a bit..I guess. Interesting
I really don't see how the state would keep up with guys trading cars and restoration values. I guess if you got an audit they would explain all that to you..smiles newangel

The value is when new and then reduced each year till you reach a minimum. Doesn't matter what the value of the antique car is. You are billed when you apply for plates (registration). If you don't drive it then there is no PERSONAL property tax. I believe most use blue book value on used vehicles and anything over a certain age is at minimum. Vermont I was told charges for the actual value but I don't know how they determine it. Maybe one of the VT members will reply.

in virginia, at least 15 years ago, owners of antique autos paid a yearly property tax. it was way more than 10 bucks for, say , a 1955 corvette. friend had one back then and if i recall , he paid a couple hundred bucks a year on the unrestored 55. no such tax in maryland thank god. mike

A little confusing. Tiny says $18 per year. I guess he has to buy a plate every year? In Tn. the plate is for life ($24.50). There is no yearly sticker to show if the plate is in date. The condition is that you won't use it for a daily driver.

In Arkansas we pay personal property tax on registered vehicles and trailers each year even though the antique plate ( $15) is good for as long as you own the vehicle. Thank goodness at 25 yr old the tax is but a pittance no matter what the true market value. this is a pretty good deal for us'n that got alot of old iron.

In Iowa we renew the plates each year, the cost is based on list price and weight when new. For example when we bought the 2003 Corvette new it was $503.00 per year and after 8 years it starts to drop, I think it's about $230.00 now. My 72 Monte is $18.00 plus $5.00 for the personalized plate. A few years ago they changed the and the lowest is now $50.00. Pickups where $65.00 max but they changed it to be like cars and SUV's unless your a farmer or business. We get stickers and about every 10 years the issue new plates.

If you renew each year a sticker is issued that attaches to the plate. As long as you renew you keep the same plate, however if you skip one year then you will need a new plate. Registration date is determined by the birth month of the person who owns the vehicle. Normally a form is sent in the mail from the town clerks office with a list of registrations due and the amount. If nothing has changed you can mail a check and the registrations and plate validation stickers are returned via mail. If adding a vehicle then a visit to the town hall is in order. If deleting one then simply indicate so and deduct the amount due.

"Antique automobiles, I feel, are difficult to assess correctly unless you physically go look at them, and I don't have the staff or the time to do that type of investigative work. You would almost have to go to the individual's garage and examine them to fairly determine their value," said Shaffer.

Snowballs would fly through the hot place before I would let a state official inside my garage to paw all over my vintage cars to access a tax value!

Makes me glad I only have to pay state tax and title fee when we transfer an antique car into my name here in MI. Thats all they get you for here besides the plate. We have a cheap historical plate thats for limited use. I've never heard of anyone being pulled over by a cop and issued a ticket because they were not goint to/from a car show though.

Yet one more thing to consider before I move out of this state and into another!

I imagine each state is different. In Kansas it's a flat $18 per year for an antique vehicle whether it's worth $100 or $100,000. You're issued an antique license plate that is yours as long as you own the vehicle. You can put a YOM plate on your vehicle as I did but there's no yearly sticker or new plate issued. I just carry my receipt for the $18 in the car with me as I would the registration form for a new vehicle along with my proof of insurance.

My 52 is taxed as a motor vehicle with a value established by state law not county regulation. The annual cost for a regular license is around 28 bucks. I could pay a one time fee of about 75 ddollars for a regular plate or I can purchase and antique classic car plate which is permanent for around 75 bucks. I prefer the regular plate as I like to drive it when and where I want and the antique/classic plate has limitations. talk

The annual plate renewal fee for my truck in California is $117. That includes $69 for DMV registration, a $10 Special Plate Fee for the YOM plates, a $10 fee which goes to Sonoma County, and a personal property tax of $28. No restrictions on when or where it can be driven. I'm surprised the fees are not more, considering the goofy political climate here!

It sure beats the holdup in Greece!! dance
