The pictures that I have show the 1940 battery as having a large circle on the front with a Bow Tie in the center.Chevrolet above the Bow Tie as well as in it-Delco below.Old batteries had three visable cells seperated by tar (tar top) and large lead connector straps connecting the cells.I have never seen a modern reproduction battery that even comes close to looking like an original.

Gene,
With your reply that leads me to my next questions. What is accepted by the judges for this car & year. Are any of the reproductions better than the others. What would you use.
Thank You

Sparky, My guess would be a modern 6 volt Delco battery. I have never seen a Chevrolet-Delco battery reproduced. The Judging Manual states a 5 point deduction for a non-Delco battery after 1922-A later model Delco Battery that is not correct for the year 2 points. That would mean every 6 volt car would require a 2 point deduction for having the incorrect battery (I am sure that this has never happened). I would like Steve Scott to answer this.

1940-1948 Chevrolet Delco batteries are being reproduced. The company is out of Hudson, Ohio and sells the 1940-1948 battery for $300 ? It looks very good. The reason for the high price is that this battery maker began making batteries for the 6 volt Corvettes. He was selling the 6 volt Corvette batteries for $300+. His theory was that Corvette owners would pay the $300+ price in order not to loose points on the battery in judging. Since the 1940-1948 Chevy battery was very similar, but not identical, he decided to also produce the correct 40-48 battery. The bad news is that the price I believe is $300. Even though almost all of his other Delco batteries are about $125. For me, I run an early NOS tar top original Delco in my 1940 coupe. It does not have the correct original 1940 Chevrolet Delco design on it, so I just take the 2 point deduction at the VCCA meets. I'm a Chevy nut, but $300 for a battery is not my cup of tea.

The reproduced battery for a Corvette has both Chevrolet and Delco on it?I don't think so.After WWII Chevrolet no longer sold batteries,The dealer purchased them thru a UMS (Delco) dealer. Will need to check into this

Chev Nut and toolman,
I know a little about copyright law, so I know that this fellow in Hudson, OH could probably produce his overpriced 'knock-offs' for years without getting called on it, because it's a small volume specialty item. If it was a large volume item that actually affected the copyright holder company sales, however, watch out!
This topic also reminds me never to subject my 40 to VCAA judging. Even though I have tried to keep it as stock as I am able, there are so many of these little rules that it wouldn't even get off the starting block.

Refference in 1949 Chevrolet databook-shows picture of Delco battrey on page 170.Has circle with Delco in the center-in small letters above-- Delco-Remy and Anderson, indiana below. This is exactly as I remembered them-lugged enough of them around in my "youth" as we had to take them to a Delco Distributor for warranty. That is also as I remembered the reproduction batteries as looking-didn't think they were around anymore.
Doc-don't let this discourage you from VCCA judging. It isn't all that bad.The majority of cars have the incorect batteries plus many more faults. It still intresting to have your car judged-if for no other reason than just to see how many incorrect items the judges missed.Only the very best restored cars are "gone over with a fine tooth comb".Your car sure looks great in the pictures-all the work that your putting into it is beginning to pay off

The problem is they don't offer a pre war style battery with the Chevrolet name and Bow Tie on it.
