Hello,
A friend of the family is contemplating selling his 61 Impala SS after 25 years. He is convinced that the car has some sort of significance because the serial number is 196101. I understand that first car in 1961 would have been 100001. It could just be a coincidence, but I am trying to research the car. I contacted GM and of course they only have data back to 1972. Is there any way to verify the history of this car other than just decoding the VIN? Thanks for the help.

It is a "neat" number; but, as noted, no real significance.

Along the lines of me noticing the odometer reading on our '37 sedan I purchased in '07. Got in to drive home after purchasing from previous owner and noticed it read 19037. Seemed kinda "neat" to be showing 19037 miles (on a 1937) since restoration.

Bill.
