Gene,
Based on your recent posting to the 38 grille question in another thread, which has evolved to dash switches, I now have to wonder if I have the correct switches in my 39 M.D. All three of mine are "Guide" type toggle switches. The heater & fog light switch cases are black and the heater is tan. All three have white toggles with the name of the switch. Currently the heater & defroster are to the immediate right of the steering column and the fog light switch is to the left. I'm at work so I can't check to make sure if there are three holes in the bottom of the dash on the left side.
Two questions: 1. Are these toggle switches even correct, or should they be knobs? 2. Should all three switches be on the left side for 39s?
Thanks as always, Ralph

Hi RalphL, All three switches should be mounted on the left in the factory holes provided. Additionally, all three switches should be the same color.

Calmcar is correct as to the mounting positions of the heater and defroster switches.I just went out and checked my '39.Heater and defroster to the right of the column and fog lights to the left.I have one left hole open-----This is an example of what to expect in your old age  --was thinking that they were all to the left. But than I have been driving the car for only the last 30 years. Type of switch. The 1940 was the first year to use the flipper type switch. It was available in various colors thru the next 10 years ,colored to match the dash trim and also sold as the replacement switch for the earlier years. Also all switches were mounted to left of column from 1940 and up. The 1937-39 switches have a knob that is rotated to controll speed as well as for off and on.The shaft or housing behind the knob was threaded and large thin nuts held it to the dash. Some aftermarket switches were made in a simular way switch was retained to a bracket by the nuts-bracket can be discarded and switch mounted thru a hole of the correct size. 1937 knob was of the mixed brown colors and the sides were tapered - knob being larger at the far end (away from the switch) 1938-39 knobs had straighter sides-slightly fluted for grip.!938 was light gray and 1939 rose biege (tan) as were the other interior knobs (on a Master DeLuxe)-There are some after market switches with knobs that are almost identicle to the 1937 switch. I have seen them in marbleled red and tan...but they are slightly smaller in size..All of the 1937-39 switches faced downward and from the drivers position you see only the side of the knob.(they were also lighted).

After a little research I found that the 1938-39 back-up ligh switch clamps on to the lower dash and is a push-pull type switch....instructions call for locating it to the left side.

I have checked my switch collection for 1938-39 and I found none--for those who have asked.

Gene & JR,
Thanks for the posts with all the great info. I've never "crawled around" the interior of a correct 39 M.D. before. I've only had my two and am just going by what's there. My later model M.D. had accessory (aftermarket) backup lights and the switch was a whiteish pull-down flat knob under the dash to the left of the steering wheel. I took the other switches out of it before I sold the car and replaced the aftermaket (wrong voltage) switches that were in my early model M.D. thinking the toggle ones were correct.
JR: Would you mind emailing me some pictures of the switches you have and your price? Please use this account:

Thanks, Ralph
