On my 1946 1 Ton Panel Truck, which has had the engine replaced with a 1954 235, there are small brackets at the lower front of the engine which look they were once supports for engine side pans. There are no side pans now, but I am wondering, did all '46 trucks have side pans from the factory? Did any?

I have them on my very original '30 Chevy car, so I can see generally how they fit.

Does anyone have a set for sale? Would fitting up to the 235 be any problem? I'll post in Parts Wanted if my truck should have them.

The 1929-1948 Master Parts Catalog, page 398, shows engine sidepan parts in group number 8.112 as parts numbers 3653674 (right) and 3665133 (left). It states these are for "ALL 1 TON COMM. and UTIL. (exc. COE)". It also indicates they are the same for 1937-1946.

My 38 1/2 ton had side pans but I have not seen any larger trucks to know if they them or not. If so they are probably the same on all models.

Thanks to you both for the info. so far. Looks like I'll be trying to find a pair. Does anyone have photos showing those from 37-46, so I'll know I'm getting the right ones.

37Blue, do you mean that only side pans from a 1 Ton, not 1/2 or 3/4, will fit my 1 ton? I wonder what the differences are.

Is there sort of a "side pan kit", which may include front and rear brackets needed (I don't think I have any kind of brackets to support the rear ends of the pans)?

Sidepans for the 1 Ton models are different than the other Commercial Vehicles (1/2 or 3/4 Ton models). The catalog lists different part numbers. I do not know the difference. But, I suspect at least size.

Other models and years used sidepans and brackets, but they too have different part numbers.

The Master Parts Catalog shows sidepan brackets were used. It lists different part numbers for each front and rear, left and right piece; four different parts and numbers.

Left front: 375765
Right front: 375766
Left rear: 594369
Right rear: 3653710

I recall hearing that these sidepan assemblies (pans and brackets) were typically removed and discarded during maintenance . They were (are) a nuisance when working on the starter, exhaust or other nearby parts. Judging from the years of caked and baked on grease and dirt I had to remove from those my '46 has; they were also a mess otherwise too.

I have photos of these parts for my '46 half ton, that may help somewhat. I am certain I didn't shoot photos with dimensions, so I'll need to do that. I'll post some photos in the next day or two.

If you find a set you will have to modify the hole for the exhaust since the 216 went straight down and the 235 is on a angle,I got a set for my 37 but since I have Fenton headers the drivers side will have to be severly modified if they go on. In a couple weeks I will be heading to the local Dayton junkyard that has a few 41-6 big trucks to look for a early 235.

Here are some photos of the side pans and the four brackets. The sidepans are 27 inches long. Pan labled "left" shows holes for exhaust and steering column.

Brackets are labeled LF--left front; LR--left rear; RF--Right front and RR--Right rear.

37Blue, thanks for those well done photos. I like that "chalk on the floor" idea, for a quick way to dimension. Now I'll start looking. I know I should expect the 1 Ton pans to be a little different.

Not sure why sidepans were used, maybe to keep the engine compartment "atmosphere" a little cleaner. But I'd like to make it like original if I can find some.

Jeff, thanks, let me know if you find anything. Call me, maybe I'll help you look. I'm starting a little on my 216/235 side cover modifications. Will get with you as questions arise.

There's a set of side pans listed for sale on ebay: Item number 251207204026. The seller listed them: "1941-1946 Chevy Truck Oil Slash (sic) pans".

I have been told they tend to allow heat to build up in the engine compartment and into the cab,I have a set for my 37 but probably will be the last parts to be installed. If they go on I am thinking about having louvers punched in them to allow more heat to escape and not get in the cab.

Actually the side pans allow the engine to run cooler. They route the air past the block instead of having it bypass. That makes the dead air next to the engine and firewall hotter.

I have never thought of it that way,it looks like I will have another little project to do this winter. I have to modify the drivers side for the dual pipes and looks like I will have to split it in half and find a way bolt them togather after its mounted on the frame.

Other than the eBay auction mentioned, all of the other posts appear to be related to a technical discussion concerning truck engine side pans.

I think that the poster (37Blue) was trying to help the original poster (46 Panel) to find a set of pans as he stated he intended to post a wanted ad if they were originally installed on his truck.

That is correct and the way a STAND ALONE similar post probably should be handled. However, if this ENTIRE thread is read it is evident the OP was asking a technical question AND if the item in question might be available for sale. In THIS case it is reasonable to simply continue that thread with the post link as was done.

Now in the interest of not HIJACKING this thread, let's get back on topic.

Yes, that is and has always been the general approach. BUT, to be CLEAR there will be some judgment involved and IF necessary appropriate action WILL BE taken.

I have temporarily UNLOCKED this thread so that I can respond to it.

The posting directly above this one, is a good example of a BAD POSTING.

It is OFF-TOPIC and continues a discussion that is administrative in nature. It should be posted in a different thread -- NOT this one.

If you REALLY want to ask about HOW to use this FORUM, then go to GENEREAL DISCUSSIONS, or to CHAT DISCUSSIONS.

For the last time stop trashing other peoples posts with BS discussions about how to run the Forum.

I'm posting this for the whole world to see so that you know what is considered unacceptable behavior. In the future, I will begin to DELETE such comments. Yes, that's a new policy.

---THIS THREAD IS NOW LOCKED---

46 Panel, we appreciate your time, please start a new post if you need additional information.
