I just purchased a piece of literature which features the 1940 Chevrolet. It is printed in German. One picture on the brochure shows what appears to be 15 - 1939 4 door convertibles. The decription on this picture says:

Eine Anzahl von Armee-Chevrolets, Modell 1939, vor dem Bieler Montage-Werk zur Lieferung bereit

Would someone please interprete this ssentence. It appears that these were produced for the Army?

A number of Army Chevrolet, Model 1939, available before Bieler assembly plant to supply

Did a copy/paste into Google translate

A similar translation could also be.....

A number of Army Chevrolet, Model 1939, available outside the Bieler assembly plant for delivery.

Google translate gives the option of diffferent meanings for different words.......cool.

some more explanation. Biel is a town in switzerland where the GM assembly plant was located.
Have as well some original paperwork (a catalogue) about the 1939 assembled in switzerland.
In the headline is written "Schweizer Montage" "assembled in switzerland", but Montage is not only assembly in german language.
Montage is as well monday (Montag) and Montage may be just a number of mondays.
So a friend of mine asked me in a kiddish way: Hey, what have swiss mondays to do with chevrolet cars??? Just kidding...

Hi all, i may join in : Gm had a assembley plant in Biel Switzerland where they have put Chevys together, but realy most of the GM cars for Switzerland / Europe. The 15 Convertibles are actually Touring Pheatons which where produced for the swiss army. They are ready to deliver outside the plant. In switzerland we have four national laguages : German, French, Italian and Romantsch. Just to understand, the town Biel is on the border of German / Fernch speaking area. So the word montage has nothing to do with monday's ( monday-car = all wrong with it ), but means mounting ( assembley ). Well done for those who made the way to translate...

As i own one of those 15 Chevy master 85 Touring Pheaton , i can answer some questions. of those 15 car, four still exist, two of them i ownd and i've seen all 4 existing cars.
I have Newsfilms ( Wochenschau ) of that time, where they report about Swiss army 1939 and show a view scenes with the Swiss touring Pheatons.

@ Brewster :
Thanks for your pictures, as i look closley i think these cars on your pic's are 1939 Chevy CONVERTIBLES build in Belgum, as the doorwindows, windscreen and Top is different.

@ All : if you like to see pictures when i bought the car and after Restoaration, go to my website = mainpage and go to the link " Hochzeitsfahrt ", and " Projekte " = Chevrolet master at least until i found out how to post pic's....
