How thick should a new carbon-faced throwout bearing for a 1931 car be? My existing one is about 3/16 in. thick and I'm sure it's worn. If a new one is considerably thicker it explains a lot about my clutch's function (or malfunction).

Best Regards and Merry Christmas,

Tom

I measured a new one and it was 1/4 off the fork. Several used ones measured 1/8 to 3/16.

Hi,
If you are having problems with the clutch due to a worn throw-out. Can that be rectified by a clutch free play adjustment?
Cheers,

Hi Alan,
Tom, the original poster of this thread has been unable to get his clutch to adjust with the adjusting bolt on the clutch actuation plate on the pedal/ throw out lever. He is now in the process of searching for the reason he is out of the normal adjustment.

On RHD cars such as your tourer , there is also an actuating plate , but in the form of an angle. It also has an adjusting bolt , with lock nut to enable the pedal freeplay to be adjusted.
Provided that the throw out bearing carbon is not excessively worn, or other problems exist, such as worn hole in the plate, worn throw out lever , fingers in the clutch plate being worn , etc etc. normal adjustment can be achieved.

Throw out bearing carbon insert is 1/2 thick or a bit more. It comes out of the housing and can be replaced. Only the Filing Station is out at this time and I am waiting for one also.
I made one out of Polypropylene that I think will work.
One is not that hard to make.
Have fun , everett

is getting someone to make replacement carbon inserts that hard of a task ?? just wondering. Also do we know what grade of carbon is used. an ASME or Equivalent number would help.

we have carbon sleeve bearings made all the time at work for our products.
