Does anyone know where I can find a couple horns for my 40? While installing a new wiring harness, we found out that - as I suspected - both horns are 'Fried' and emit only a weak, 'sick cow' tone when 6 volts is applied, accompanied by profuse sparks from the coil beneath the "points.
Never mind an exact fit - any 6 volt horn should do. I'm pretty adept at "Mickey Mousing". The horns are the old 'Snail Shell' type. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Oh, and on the same subject, is stringing a new wire through the steering column as difficult as it looks? (The present one has a dead short somewhere in the column. Have about decided to just add an after market button on the steering column.

Hi DocB, I would check out ebay for the horns. Normally, you can make adjustments to the present horns in order to allow for the wear. The horn wire in the steering column is a bit more complicated than you think. Actually, the wire is attached to the bottom of the steering column bushing. This bushing also has a contact ring on the top where the horn is activated. It will be necessary to remove the steering wheel and then remove the bushing. If the bushing is still functional a new wire can be attached (soldered) to the bushing and routed down the column and out the hole provided under the hood. If you run a search you will find my step by step directions along with pictures. Actually I just did the search and here is the result. HORN

I don't know what the difference is between 38 and 40 but here is a 37-38 on e-bay. They seem to be pretty common so maybe if you keep an eye out the correct horn may show. Horn Brian

The 1940 was the first year to use the "short" horns.Same from 1940-48.I have a pair of new Delco horns-stud spacing about 2 3/8"- and sure that they would fit OK.Let me know if yours don't "adjust"....

After reading the horn link i think there is something wrong with mine..Is the horn ring supposed to be pressed on the shaft or in the mast jacket? mine is on the shaft and turns inside the jacket i think maybe its supposed to be the other way around and that for some reason it got frozen to the shaft i always thought it was kinda odd.
