I am still working on my rock screen project. After taking the emblem off of the rad. shell, I see that the emblem that attaches to the rock screen has a different attachment. The emblem that is being reproduced has a bolt in the center. The bolt emblem appears to be a replacement for the rad. shell emblem. What have people done for the rock screen emblem attachment retofit? I have heard of using double sided sticky tape but would like to have a more permanant fix. Does anyone make a reproduction of the rock screen emblem? Thanks for any help!!!! Three Window

I had to fabricate a new plate that solders to the screen. I think my original got lost at the plater when they plated the screen. The one I made turned out real nice and I took many pictures while making it. Send me a p.m. at steveq@carifle.com if you want to see the pictures.

As you know there are 2 main parts to the emblem assembly for the '31 stoneguard, 1.The plated backer plate, and 2. the emblem itself. An emblem with a bolt on the back will not work. The backing plate (which is soldered to the mesh) is used to bolt the stonegaurd to the upper fastener on the rad shell using a 1/4" round head machine screw. The original "stoneguard emblem" was different than the standard emblem, and had an offset spring steel clip that shoved into the depression in the backing plate where the above screw sits, to create a tight fit. These emblems are not reproduced as far as I know. So I have used a standard emblem, removed the old clip from the back, and used 3M tape to fix it to the backer plate. This is the same type of tape used to fit moldings on modern cars, and I would suggest is permanent unless someone wants to pry it off with some effort and care.

I have used the 3M tape for the emblem on my 32 and it has been on for over 12 years with no problems.

If you are careful and make sure the enamel is clean you can lead solder a clip on the back of the badge to suit either the radiator shell or the two clips required for the stone gaurd provided you heat it slowly with a small torch and let it cool slowly, I have done it a couple of times now.

What I did on mine was carfully grind off the stud that is on the new emblem. Then I went to the hardware store and bought an electrical conduit box hole cover. Make sure that it is metal and not plastic. Find one that has the prongs that will fit the hole in the screen guard. I then drilled a few small holes through the round cover to let the epoxie through and then epoxied it to my new emblem. Mine has been on for 4 1/2 years and 4700 miles. If this is to confusing please email me with a phone number and maybe I can explain it better than my typing.

If you would like to see what an original emblem for the stone guard looks like, there is one on ebay. Item #221153318061. The price is $155.

That ebay item # is correct for a 31 stone guard but is missing the clip that fits either side of the bolt to stop the emblem turning. The clips I made were cut out of brass and bent in to the right shape then lead soldered on the emblem in the appropriate spots. The one that is missing is like a c channel and the two prongs go either side of the bolt. The emblem just pushes on into the backing plate that is soldered on to the mesh.

Sal, Thanks for the reply. Your idea for the hole blank worked well. At my local Ace Hdwe I found a part in the fastner dept.,in the little parts drawers, that fit perfectly. The part in the electrical dept had prongs that were to short. I cleaned and roughed the surfaces, drilled holes and used JB Weld to attach the parts together. Worked great. Project complete.
