Does anyone know what the gas tank on a 40 chevy was plated with. Was it galvanized or zink or something else.

Thanks for your help!

The fuel tank was made from stamped terne plate. Its not plated etc....It has a natural dull silver color.Zink would be close in color.

The only way I could answer that would be to lie.I would guess its an alloy of some kind using zink or tin or something that is rust resistant. The rear spring covers were made from the same material.

For VCCA judging silver paint is accepted.Use a dull silver-not bright aluminum paint.

Eastwood sells a zink spray for gas tanks. (www.eastwoodco.com). I prefer to first seal my tanks (POR-15 sealer) then paint the outside with POR-15 silver. (www.por15.com) I figure between the inside and outside coating any pinholes are filled and the tank will last forever.
