I have a new Sulphon bellows type thermostat in my 216.It does not regulate the temperature very well. The engine temp goes very high before opening and sometimes it does not close at all.Are these nos thermostats too old for use ? does the gas in the bellows slowly leak out after 50 years?

They look interesting, don't they...? But as your experience already indicates...Be good to your motor...Go with a modern thermostat...

The thermostat is listed as an accessory in the accessory catalog. If that's so and it's an accessory it must not be needed at all except for extreme situations or weather. Take it out and see what happens.

It might be interesting to "see what happens"...But if your sure your radiator and water pump are fine, why bother...? Then there's the problem with your engine not ever coming up to operating temp....Who'd want that...?

FWIW, I never install a new (or used) thermostat without testing it in water on the stove with a dependable stem-type thermometer. Also, I hold it with pliers so it can only take heat from the water. You can see at what temp they begin to open and watch the temp to full open. I have found several new thermostats that I would not install. (No, I ain't very smart -I simply want to know what's going on before I depend on the stat.)
