I was bidding on a set of 4 nice N.O.S. Hub Caps, tonight...Thought they would be a nice addition to my collection...But was I in for a surprise when the winning bid cleared $500 buck-a-roos...!

Yes, and the original hubcaps often do not have the same chrome plating shine on them. 44 years ago I turned down a set of 4 NOS hubcaps for my 1940 coupe at a cost of $20/set. I just figured way back in 1968 that why would I need them since I was running chrome reverse rims on my old 1940 at the time.

The seller mentioned he thought they could us a bit of a "buffing..." I suppose I'm fortunate to have a decent set on my car...

Kevin, Wow! Over 500 bucks! Carol Hook had a NOS set in the box at Hershey way back in 1971 or so. I thought 75 buck was a way too much. I got another set later on at Carlisle for 125.00. They are NOS in the box. also. They are somewhere in the attic of the garage. I haven't noticed them lately. I may have to give them up to complete the instant project which is going slow. The new ones that they make are much more bright. I don't know why anyone would want the old ones. I just like original no matter what. Charlie Note: Sorry about use of the grin thing and the exclamation point.

The hub caps on my 1938 Master coupe are the original ones, that came on the car when new. They are scratched up ,slightly dented and missing some of the paint in the indentations in spots......Still I would not trade them even for a Nos set of new ones. I love my car just the way it is. I can envision the original owner changing a flat tire on a country road on a cold and rainy night, popping off the hub cap with the lug wrench throwing it down in the berm gravel, tossing the lug nuts in the cap for safe keeping, cursing his/her luck to have a flat in this storm and dealing with it. All of this done with no regard for the hub caps future condition so they are put back on at that time by anyway that is easiest...Hit hard with the palm of their hand, kicked with a foot or reinstalled in any way possible. Or maybe not put back on at all, just thrown in the trunk and left to bounce around back there until the owner thinks about them after a period of time.......These thing are veterans and should be treated as such....Not tossed in the trash and replaced with a new shiny set just for vanity.>>>>>>>>ED

I was only wrong one time in my life so far. But that time I was right, and only thought I was wrong....ED

Well, I guess the new ones aren't as well made as the old ones...A buddy of mine said he saw 4 NEW ones at the flea market last month...Get this...$40 bucks...But didn't think to buy them for me for X-mas...He's getting coal for X-mas...lol Yeah...The NOS ones are noticeably duller...Like me I still have the color scheme painted backwards on mine and no one seems to notice...Looks pretty neat, too.

Yeah, I suspect mine are the ones that came with my car, too. So I know what you mean...Their not going anywhere...Part of it's originality...In pretty fair shape, too. I shine them and wax them...

I have an NOS set for the '48 that I bought in the 70s, but I'm running a repro set. They are a beautiful reproduction and the chrome is much better and shinier than my NOS set.

I have repo's on my 48 from The Filling Station. Have a few used ones originals that are pretty rough.

I, too, plan on running a repro set owing to their brighter appearance. My idea was to put the NOS ones on if I ever have the car judged (That'll be the day!) but I now think that they would be a minus rather than a plus. Question: What are we going to do with the old NOS original set? Beats me. What about you Dale? Charlie
