do the new alloy pistons have an offset to the piston pin. I note in the chev repair manual the invar strut piston had a
slot which should face towards the cam, which would suggest
an offset.

Please note: the workshop manual is wrong!
The slot should face away from the camshaft as stated in the 1928 service bulleton. The new pistons I got from Egge have the slot in them.
