In my '32 the 'bell housing', around the universal has a modern style grease nipple fitting in the top. How is the universal lubricated, what lubrication is used, how much is required, how do you know how much is in it, does it get any lubrication from the free wheeler box. I assume that the whatever lube is used it also lubricates the tail-shaft plain bearing.
regards,
John

Originally, there was a 1/8" pipe plug at that location.

No more than 1/2 pint of 600W oil should inserted into the universal joint ball retainer.

The universal joint also gets lubrication from the transmission through the rear bearing.

Thanks.
How can I check to see how much is in there, or how do I drain it so I can refill with correct lube?

You can make a "dip stick" out of a wire stuck into the hole where the lube fitting screws in.

Oh, no! You got ahead of me. 1/4 to 1/2 full. All it takes to properly lube the U-joint is a little lube to be splashed around. Some extra to account for leaks is okay but too much only saps some power.

If the U Joint case is same as 30/31, then about 4 oz of oil is max you should add. Any more causes oil to run out into speedo cable and leak on floor, or run to rear in torque tube causing overfilling issue there. I made a simple dip stick from 1/4" wide stainless strip, and it shows about 1/2" of oil when bottomed out in case. For best results, completely drain out the old gunk first using drain plug on end of speedo cable and then refill.

That is only if you have a defective torque tube bushing seal.
