On my 28 Chevvies, I find I don't have enough light from the standard bulbs to give enough road illumination. I know halogen bulbs are possible, as well as conversion kits. I am thinking more along the lines of a conversion kit, perhaps what the FS offers :

Also, Restoration Supply offers a kit with much of the above, but with new reflectors as well.

Does anyone have any experience with using halogen lights to help?

Much appreciated,

Jay

I have not tried halogen headlamp conversion but understand that they require a lot more power so an alternator conversion in needed to keep them fired up. Then you need a relay near the lights so you don't have to rewire the light system and replace the switch. 50 cp bulbs and silver plated reflectors produce a near seal beam quality light. At least on my '28 Coupe.

I understand about the alternator being necessary. A year ago at Hershey a vendor, Nu-Rex, a firm that produces several products for the Model A crowd, also make up high quality alternators. I ordered a six volt, 60 amp negative grounded (Model A is pos. ground)and have installed it with the bracket FS sells. I do use 50 cp bulbs, the reflectors are the original fluted design with a silver coating. But its not enough light for dark country roads.

OTOH, my 28 Coupe came with a 8 volt system, with the generator cranked up a notch. Plenty of candlepower on those babies, but I will probably install a six volt system soon. The 8 plus volts are hard on all the bulbs in that car.

So, anyone else gone down the halogen light road?
