I have a 6 cylinder in my 31 chevrolet truck. its all original the hand crank turns a little but not to much. Im redoing the wiring and I want to know the best way to get linderit running all original as it is now(hopefully without rebuilding it). What kind of oil should i use? and should i lube up the engine or pistons in anyway? I did take off the cylinder head and it didnt look to bad, my fuel tank is clean and dry but i was going to rebuild the fuel pump with a rebuild kit cuz its dirty. any other info or advice would help im not to familiar with these engines. thanks

Are you saying the engine can only be hand cranked part way? With the head already off you might start by having it tested for cracks.
If you have old Chevrolets, other old Chevrolets will find out where you live.

Dan, There are literally dozens and dozens of threaded discussions here on CHAT that discuss things that you might want to do before you try to start it. The appropriate prevention can save you tons of work in rebuilding a broken part.
It might be easier for you to ask us questions depending upon "where" you are in your restore process.
Example: Take a 12" metal rod and add a slot at one end of it. Insert this into an electric drill and use it to drive the oil pump. (Pull distributor and put rod down the opening until you engage the oil pump gear.) This allows you to pump oil to all locations and see whether the flow is appropriate.
With the spark plugs OUT of the car, you'll find it significantly easier to turn the engine over with oil already pumped to all of the right locations. :-)
Ask away!

It is the consensus of the Forum that you use 5W-30 detergent oil. Remove the distributor if installed. Chuck up an old screwdriver, that is missing the handle, or a rod that is flattened on one end, and stick it down the hole for the distributor. Engage the oil pump drive slot. Run the drill for several minutes to circulate oil throughout all the engine passages and to all the troughs that need oil. Inspect to see if every place is receiving oil. Without the plugs being installed turn the engine over several times with the starter.

For the cost of a pan gasket it might be a good idea to pull the pan. Inspect the bottom end for dirt and debris.

Especilly since moisture collects and rusts the bottom of the pan.
